I need a free word processor that plays nicely with DPI.

I own Word but some of my students need a free program.
I was using LibreOffice but that doesn't seem to be working now.

Thanks!

then tweak Jarte & drogon

Dragon NaturallySpeaking Fix

A fix needs to be applied to Dragon NaturallySpeaking in order to get that product to work properly with Jarte. Here are the steps for implementing the required fix:

  • Ensure you are using the latest version of Jarte (currently, version 5.3)
  • Close Dragon NaturallySpeaking.
  • Find a file named C:\ProgramData\Nuance\NaturallySpeaking12\nsapps.ini in your Dragon NaturallySpeaking installation folder and edit it (change the "12" to match the version of Dragon NaturallySpeaking you are using).
  • Find section [.Global\Global Enable Class Names] in the file.
  • Add the following line to the end of that section: RichEdit20=4
  • Save the the change and close the file.
  • In Jarte, go to Help > System Information > Edit Settings
  • Find setting "Class Name" and change it to: Class Name=RichEdit20
  • Restart both Dragon NaturallySpeaking and Jarte.
  • cheers dan

I don't know if anyone else has encountered this. I was unable to save nsapps.ini after editing it without booting up in safe mode.

Dan's answer is very slick but if you only need a simple word processor, note that Dragon already plays well with DragonPad and Microsoft WordPad.

the Jarte word processor is Microsoft WordPad with a very slick set of commands that gives you most of the capabilities of full Microsoft Word without the bloat. on the other hand Microsoft WordPad may be all that you need.

Thanks, Dan. I'm afraid I would have student brains on the ceiling if I tried to walk them through that.
I did switch them to WordPad last week so I think we'll stick with that.
We only need it for a short time while they are learning their Computer Aided Transcription software.
As always, thanks, everyone!

that's OK

the ini file - you have to make changes and save when dragon is not running + take ownership of dragon folders & files - there is a neat reg hack for that:

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/add-take-ownership-to-explorer-right-click-menu-in-vista/

not for the faint hearted

me I like win 10 to operate how i want it too - i want to be the boss - it is why i never went with mac - you lose freedom when the state wraps you in security but for whose benifit?

Let's tarin our dragon and bring win 10 to heel

cheers

Dan
