Recently, my Dragon 14 professional has stopped working.  When it was installed, it worked properly, however now, when it starts up, the icon in the tray appears, however it no longer works to turn on the microphone.  When I right-click it, the "Turn Dragon's Microphone On" option is greyed out.

I am using a blue-tooth headset that is connected, I can hear the system sounds and test music with it.  I also regularly use it with Skype, however Skype is set to start only on demand - the autoload feature is turned off.

The microphone is the same one I have been using and never had a problem with it before (Plantronics).  It normally works perfectly.

I am using Windows 7, and dragon 14.000.000.180.

I cannot tell if this is a Nuance issue, or a problem with Windows 7.

Any ideas as to how to fix this?

Welcome to the World's Most Popular Speech Recognition Forum

Keep in mind that Nuance isn't in the microphone business. Nuance microphone recommendations should be taken with a grain of salt. Plantronics USB and Bluetooth microphones do not meet our minimum requirements but our best guess is that your microphone either is no longer connecting to its Bluetooth dongle or Windows has lost its connection to the Plantronics Bluetooth dongle.

When you say you can hear the system sounds and test music with it, are you referring to your Bluetooth headset? If you're playing music through external speakers, you are only using the integrated soundcard which isn't being used for Dragon. Have you tried running the Microphone Check to verify that Dragon can see your USB soundcard (Bluetooth dongle). Sometimes Dragon will lose track of the USB connection and then reestablish it by changing its name to #2. If you see 2 choices, when running the Microphone Check, rebooting Windows might be the best solution. If the previous recommendations fall short of the mark and your Plantronics microphone is less than a year old, you might consider contacting Plantronics 800 544-4660 for a warranty replacement. If you have to replace your microphone, you might as well do it right. Our preference is the Sennheiser MB Pro1/2

The problem I am having seems to be with the Dragon 14 software. The Dragon 14 software is not working with Windows 7.
---
Baseline:
The Bluetooth headset I have, is the same one that I have been using very successfully with Dragon 14 for several months.
I have tested the Bluetooth headset with the Windows 7, using the built-in "Control Panel, Sound, Playback" dialog, and the Bluetooth headset is communicating properly with Windows.
The Bluetooth headset internal microphone test shows proper response.
The Bluetooth headset internal speaker plays the test music properly, and I can hear the system sounds properly through the Bluetooth headset internal speaker.
The Bluetooth headset also works properly with Skype, when I am using Skype - Please note that Skype is disabled when using Dragon to avoid any conflicts.
---
The problem I am having, is that Dragon does not seem to be recognizing that there is any type of microphone, Bluetooth headset, or otherwise connected.
When Dragon 14 is running, in the system tray, the dragon icon, right-click menu, the option to "Turn Dragon's Microphone On" option is greyed out.
It is not possible to turn on the Bluetooth headset microphone through the Dragon 14 software. Or any other microphone, Bluetooth headset or otherwise.
It also does not work using the "Dragon Bar" tool bar. The microphone option is grayed out.
---
My question is: How do I get Dragon to recognize the Windows 7, and the sound system that worked perfectly two-weeks ago?
---
The computer is a dell M4800, new in January 2016. Dragon 14 has been working properly since the original install in January 2016, using the same Bluetooth headset.
---
I have run the repair installation through Windows 7, Control Panel, Programs and Features with no change in the issue.
I have tried another Bluetooth headset, that also works properly with the computer, Skype, and system tests, however, regardless of the set-up, the "Turn Dragon's Microphone On" option is greyed out. It does not seem to matter what type of audio input is selected, Dragon 14 will still not recognize it.
---
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dragon 14 is fully Windows 7, 8.1 and 10 compliant so you can take Windows 7 off your list

You might have a misbehaving profile. Try creating a new profile and skip general training. This should only take a couple of minutes. If 1 of your 2 Bluetooth microphones aren't recognized, verify that Skype isn't running in the Task Manager. We understand that you have disabled Skype from automatically launching in Windows but please double check the Task Manager to make certain Skype hasn't snuck back in. If that doesn't work, consider uninstalling Skype; for test purposes only.

Go to Tools - Administrative Settings and check whether Correction Only mode is enabled. If it is, disable it. As the name says, when it's enabled, you can't dictate, but only correct (deferred correction).

Ok, I have tried multiple things:
- Creating a new user profile makes no difference, the problem also exists with the new user profile
- The previous suggestion "Tools - Administrative Settings and check whether Correction Only mode is enabled", could not be found, there is no such entry on the version I have. I looked under options also, and it is not found.
- I did a repair installation, and there was no change. Would the repair installation be less that a complete re-installation?
- As I mentioned in a previous post, I have established that the blue tooth headset is working - I just can't turn Dragon on.
I am using Windows 7, and dragon 14.000.000.180.

I have never had this problem in the previous versions of Dragon (the last version I had was 13). I am not sure what to try next, other than to abandon the program as a poor investment.

Performing a Repair of Dragon simply duplicates the original installation (minus various registry settings) so it should suffice.

You are looking at more than 1 investment but blaming Dragon. Dragon may only be the catalyst, as opposed the culprit. The problem could be a disagreement with your Plantronics Bluetooth microphone or Skype. We have tested a lot of Bluetooth microphones but have always recommended against using Plantronics Bluetooth models. We've also received numerous complaints about Skype/Dragon incompatibility issues but cannot verify this problem on our systems. You might consider the following sledgehammer approach which is time-consuming but free:

1. Temporarily relocate your ~ C:\ProgramData\Nuance\NaturallySpeaking14\Users\(your username) folder to the desktop

2.  Uninstall DPI 14

3.  Run DPICleaner Remover to remove every trace of Dragon from your computer (which is why we recommended moving your user profile)

4.  Reinstall Dragon

5.  Move your user profile back to the original location

We don't believe the previous recommendation will make any difference but we are offering it is a possible no-cost solution. If it doesn't work, the problem is most likely associated with Skype or your Plantronics Bluetooth microphone. We cannot be certain but our gut feeling is an odd incompatibility issue with your Plantronics Bluetooth microphone. Before throwing out the baby with the bathwater, you might consider taking us up on a 30 day customer satisfaction no restock fee guarantee on the Sennheiser MB Pro1 UC Bluetooth headset. The real problem sounds more likely a driver issue but because we don't offer or endorse Plantronics microphones, it's not something we can test.

We noted that your Plantronics microphone previously worked fine in Dragon and continues to work in Skype. Obviously there's nothing wrong with your microphone but we can think of no other solution.

Well I finally got Dragon 14 working again. It is been a long and arduous process trying get this program working again.

I finally resorted to uninstall and reinstall the entire program (using the instructions provided by Lunis - above), uninstall and reinstall the Bluetooth headset, and then setup everything up from scratch. When the Dragon 14 program was reinstalled it had the same problem that it originally had (e.g. couldn't turn on the microphone). The difference in this case, was that there was no Bluetooth headset currently installed, and, that Dragon actually recognized that it couldn't find the microphone (a feature previously not available - grayed out).

When I re-installed the Bluetooth headset, I was then able to get to the dialog where I could enable Dragon to find it. In a previous exercise, I tried to uninstall and reinstall the BT headset, however at that time, it was ineffective.

I never did figure out exactly what it was that went wrong, but once I uninstalled and reinstalled everything they had to do with Dragon, it seemed to work again. I would be curious if anyone ever has the same problem, if they determined what changed to disable Dragon.

Thank you all for your help with this.

I just got the same problem with the tray icon being greyed out. I believe it had something to do with the auto transcribe managaer that I started using as thats what I was using before this happened

This area can be caused by the AutoTranscribe Folder Agent or manually transcribing a recording. We have run into the same situation in both situations. Our original solution was to export our vocabulary via the Manager Vocabularies menu (which exports your entire vocabulary, deletions and even pronunciations) and your commands. You are literally using the same profile or you can simply tinker with the original profile. In our case, the original profile was converted into a digital recorder profile by a Dragon bug. We suspect the same thing happened to you. Hopefully this was fixed in the last patch but we can't guarantee it.

I might have helped solve the problem by switching profiles and then back again. But this might be flawed in one way so I will keep you posted
