using Dragon NaturallySpeaking 11.50.100.092 SP 1 Windows 7 home premium updated to latest
there is a consistent problem I have when I try to use the word "established" - the problem applies regardless of which application is being dictated into. every time I say the word DNS 11 types "est" – note that this is not even the correct abbreviation is the correct abbreviation would be "est." or "Est." I have attempted to go into the vocabulary system and once open have searched for a new word (indicated by a red +0 which when spoken would type "est" A custom word entry for this does not exist. I have tried using word training and saying the word "Established" while showing written form as "Established" or "established" - despite getting a green light on saying the word, when returning to using dictation it still makes the error detailed above. The word "established" is sufficiently commonly used for this to be a real pain in the*&%, does anyone have a solution to this please?
in the above the quotation marks are mine in every instance

You need to go to "tools" on the DragonBar and then click "auto formatting options" and uncheck "common abbreviations".

excellent you have established the answer for me!
I have had this problem before with standard abbreviations and in fact have unchecked that option before, it seems that it is possible that it gets returned to a checked default perhaps on upgrade - not sure. Anyway that's sorted out now and very quickly –thank you very much

Tork, Just FYI, there is also another way to go about this, which may or may not prove to be more or less useful. When you select the options in the Auto-Formatting dialog Abbreviate titles and/or Common abbreviations, all the Dragon does is to add and select the "Use alternate written form 1" option with the abbreviated title or common abbreviation. With these options set, you can also simply go to the appropriate words in the Vocabulary Editor, click on the Properties button and simply unselect the "Use alternate written form 1". This will automatically cause Dragon to display the full text rather than the abbreviation. This is simply an alternate method for handling this particular situation and is useful if there are some abbreviations that you don't want, but some that you do. For example, if you have a company name, such as Vertisoft Systems, incorporated. and you don't want incorporated spelled out., You can leave the Use alternate written form 1 options set for Inc. On the other hand, if you don't want est. but you want it spelled out as established, you can simply unselect the "Use alternate written form 1" checkbox for that word and established will always be spelled out. Also, you can reverse the process. If you have the checkbox in the Auto-Formatting dialog unselected so that all of the abbreviations are spelled out, you can locate the word for which you want an abbreviation displayed and simply reenter the checkmark in that checkbox. From that point onward, that particular word will always be abbreviated because common abbreviations and abbreviated titles always have the alternate written form displayed even if it is grayed out because the checkbox is not checked. You can use whatever method you want (i.e., method that works best for you), but I'm just giving you the other alternative and explaining how these abbreviations work. This is my preferred method. I like most of Dragon's common abbreviations, but I can't imagine a regular usage for "est." and "min." ------------------------- Eric Wright At work: DNS 12 Pro.
