I am a writer, who is disabled. My drafts are written in Microsoft Word. For about five years, I have used both "Power Structure" and "WriteWay" to structure my stories. However, neither of these software applications works well with DNS. Does anyone have any experience in this realm? I am using Windows 7 with DNS 11.5. I have an M-Tech 8650 with a Sampson Airline microphone.

G E Gardiner,

Here is a good one and it's free.  It's called yWriter 5.

http://download.cnet.com/yWriter-5/3000-2079_4-77524.html Or

http://www.spacejock.com/yWriter5_Download.html

Here is a YouTube link that shows you how to use it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ti5HNVVIV1w

It has great reviews and was developed by a novelist.  It is also DNS friendly.

Cheers

Thanks Tiger feet. Actually, I looked at the program last week and thought it was a little basic for me. I use Power Structure which is used to develop screenplays, television and novels. It is a little bit more complicated. However, it is worthless if I can use with DNS. The problem I'm having is mostly editing in some of the Windows. Have you had any problems at all using yWriter with DNS?

Glenn,

Being that it would place an undue burden on Nuance to have to support every text editor or word processor out there, they have chosen to support the most common ones and/or applications, like Notepadtabs, have taken it upon themselves to ensure that they support active accessibility and use text edit controls that support Full Text Control (Select and Say). Power Structure is way off of Nuance's radar screen. So if Power Structure is not fully compliant in terms of Active Accessibility (i.e., menu and dialog controls) and Full Text Control (Select and Say), the first thing that you might do is to check with them about whether or not their text edit controls are SAPI compliant and/or Microsoft Active Accessibility (MSAA) compliant. If it's not, don't expect Nuance to fix it because it ain't going to happen.

However, if power structure can provide you with the Windows class and other pertinent and related information, and if they use rich text edit controls that are supported by SAPI in their text windows, there is a way, by modifying the nsapps.ini file, that you might be able to add it and give it Full Text Control (Select and Say). However, there's no guarantee and the process requires precise syntax. It may or may not be worth the effort to find out. I can't believe that Power Structure is the only application of its type out there. I vaguely recall that someone else found an application that does basically the same things some time back. Maybe they can respond.

G E,

Using only Dragon, you start by saying "Project" | "New Project Wizard" | Then you initially keep on saying, "next" to fill in the preliminary details such as the book title, the authors name etc.

Once you have finished your preliminary information, you say "Finish."

Once that's done, then you can start adding stuff like chapters.  You can say "Chapter" | "Create New Chapter" | then you can dictate your chapter details in that partition.
That YouTube clip I gave you in my previous post shows you an introduction.

Here is another link from YouTube that shows you the workings in a bit more detail.

Here's a bit more information.

http://sites.google.com/site/ywritersj/comprehensive-help-file

It is Dragon friendly but it is rather slow on further investigation.

Do you find power structure really useful apart from the fact that it is not Dragon friendly?

Perhaps Chuck can tell us how to get to and modify the nsapps.ini file that you might be able to add and get full text control.

Cheers

I might be interested in doing a little bit of red myself. I'm finding it a little bit difficult to keep track of my ideas. Can anyone tell me the advantages of using products like these?

Rüdiger,

thank you for that link.  After reading through it and what you have to do, it frightened the life out of me.  I think you need to be a brain surgeon to carry that out.  I may ask Lindsay to have a look at it for me or perhaps you can simplify it?

Wheels,

Most novelists will tell you that they use Microsoft Word to write their novel in.  Although these types of software have their own word processor built in, most novelists use Word to write their novel and use this type of software to put down all their notes on characters, what chapters they appear in, breakdown of chapters, synopsis, and a host of other things, even things like a biography of each character.  You can also give a précis of each scene, look back on the chapter to see what characters are in that scene and this gives you any details you need to know about any of the characters.  This also ensures that your overlap is credible and realistic.  There are also storyboards you can use if you prefer to structure your novel.  With yWriter, you can even add pictures of your characters so it makes it easier to describe them.

Click on the YouTube links that I provided and you are shown how it works to give you an idea if it is the thing for you.

Cheers

Rüdiger,

Thank you for researching that link. You saved me some time going back through all of my stuff to find it because the last time that I searched for it was way back when the search was by technote number. Because I'm pinned between work and being the executor of my mom's estate, my time is limited. Therefore, I appreciate your being able to chime in with that link.

Chuck,

don't mention it. Searching the technote didn't take longer than posting the message in fact.
