Is there a "fail-safe method" of opening DNS 9.5 Preferred that anyone is aware of, such as opening My Computer and clicking on a file in Program Files? DNS is now pinned to my start menu, and, up to now, has opened upon (my) clicking its icon in the start menu. I haven't recently added any new software or hardware, and the problem has just occurred since two days ago. |

What happens when you click the shortcut? Are you presented with an error? If so, what is the message?
As far as starting Preferred 9 directly is concerned, you could double-click the executable which you'll find at C:\Program Files\Nuance\NaturallySpeaking9\programs\natspeak.exe. Note that if you have Windows XP in the default settings, the .exe extension will be hidden. You can optionally create new shortcut by right clicking on the executable and following the shortcut prompts. -------------------------

When I clicked the shortcut, nothing happened. When I click the executable, the splash screen displays, but DNS doesn't open. |

It sounds like it's time to perform a Repair of NaturallySpeaking.

I went into the Control Panel, opened the Add/Remove Programs, and opted for the Repair. The wizard asked me to insert the DNS disk, which I did, then it asked me to insert the DNS Disk #2, which I also did. I restarted the computer and double-clicked DNS in the Start Menu, but nothing happened. In Task Manager>Processes, DNS does not appear, but in Applications it does appear. |

Looks like it's time for a more drastic approach.
1. Copy your ~ C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Nuance\NaturallySpeaking9\Users\(your username) folder to the desktop to prevent losing it. 2. Uninstall NaturallySpeaking, while connected to the Internet, to prevent losing an activation. 3. Use DNS9.5 Remover to remove every trace of NaturallySpeaking from your computer. 4. Install Preferred 9 5. Reverse step #1 and launch NaturallySpeaking. If everything goes according to plan, you will be prompted to run the Audio Setup Wizard on your current user profile. If all else fails, you might consider upgrading to the NaturallySpeaking Premium 11.5 Upgrade which just went on sale. -------------------------

Thanks for the drastic approach, which I followed in step-by-step fashion. In short, it didn't work. That is, the installation wizard said DNS was successfully installed and that I should restart my computer. I restarted the computer, opened DNS, and imported a user from my external hard drive. Then, upon double-clicking the DNS icon on my desktop, the splash screen appeared, followed by Select User and the Tip Of The Day window. That's it! DNS appears under Processes in the Task Manager but not under Applications.

From what you're telling us, NaturallySpeaking looks like it's running correctly. NaturallySpeaking doesn't appear in the application list, in your Task Manager, because it's not an application per se; it's a utility and it will appear as NatSpeak.exe under the Task Manager's Processes tab.
It sounds like you might be running Preferred 9 in Tray Icon Only meaning that the application is hidden except for a small microphone icon in your taskbar. Try turning on your microphone, saying Start NotePad. -------------------------

"Yes," natspeak.exe appears under Processes in the Task Manager but not as an icon in my tray. On saying, "Start NotePad," Notepad opens, and I can then dictate into NotePad -- not sufficient for my needs, unfortunately. DNS itself doesn't appear in the TaskBar or anywhere else. For how long would the DNS Premium 11.1 upgrade be warranted for non-starting or not functioning? |

We still suspect that NaturallySpeaking is running correctly. The most likely scenario is that NaturallySpeaking misinterpreted 1 of your commands as tray icon mode. Have you tried clicking the little triangle on the right side of your taskbar to view hidden icons? We suspect you may find a little microphone which you can optionally drag to the viewable side of the taskbar. You can also right-click on the little microphone icon to view all of your NaturallySpeaking menus including your options. Once you get the DNS options open click on the View Tab and change the view settings to your preferences. If you can't find the icon but haven't changed your default hotkeys, try pressing the * above the #9 if you are using an extended keyboard (calculator keys on the right side of the keyboard).
We don't know of any software products that include a function or start warranty although most major applications, like NaturallySpeaking, include a 30 day customer satisfaction no restock fee guarantee. We offer that same warranty on our NaturallySpeaking Premium 11.5 Upgrade which we just put on sale. Our DNS Premium upgrade also includes a complimentary hard copy of our new NaturallySpeaking training guide and a pictorial step-by-step on how to upgrade your old user files to the new version. We realize that NotePad would be insufficient for most needs. We only recommended it to verify that NaturallySpeaking was running correctly. You can optionally say start DragonPad to open the built-in NaturallySpeaking word processor or dictate directly into other word processors such as Microsoft Word, Open Office, WordPerfect, WordPad etc. -------------------------

Excelent! Clicking on the microphone, selecting Tools>Options>View then choosing the Mode Dock to Top restored what I call the NaturallySpeaking menu bar. Subsequently, I was able to open the DragonPad and start dictating this response. So, for the time being I am back in the game. Thanks for leading me through this new option via the TaskBar. |
