Can anyone suggest any resources or the best way to work in Excel 2010 with DNS Premium 11.5? There are a couple of pages in the manual for dealing with Excel, but they cover random actions like "set this row to fractions," and do not address the really simple things like how to enter formulas with cell references in a cell. For instance, "=A2*(1-B7)". If I try saying "equal sign A2", I get "=82". If I say "equal sign alpha 2", I get "= alpha 2". If I put it in number mode, I get "Please say that again." This is driving me nuts. Thank you in advance for any suggestions. ------------------------- DNS 11.5 Pro / VoicePower |

I use MS Excel 2010 a lot. I don't claim to be an expert in entering functions, but, nevertheless, here's what I would do: 1) say "press F2" to get a blue box in the cell; 2) say "spell" and input the function into the cell from the spell box -- in your example, say: "equal, alpha, two, star, open paren, one, minus sign, bravo, seven, close paren" then "OK"; and 3) say "apply". I know this is a little clunky, but you can be confident you will get the correct data into the cell this way. Hope this helps! |

You may want view this YouTube as it will give an overview of using DNS with Excel. Beware, though, that this is a very experienced user who has worked with Excel for quite a while, but this will give you an idea of what is possible. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OsqU31EcUS8 The other thing is he is using DNS Pro as he has created many custom Excel commands which you cannot do with Premium. However, with KnowBrainer, you may be able to duplicate some of what he has done. ------------------------- Bill |

Yes; I think I will have to upgrade to DNS Pro when they come out with version 12, which I imagine will be after the release of Windows 8. I have KB2011, but I don't use it a lot because I have had experiences with it freezing my system. I'll give it another shot. I haven't been programming since college (in the 80s!), but I understand you can program for Dragon in a language called Python. Maybe I'll have to develop a new hobby and learn modern programming… ------------------------- DNS 11.5 Pro / VoicePower |

Considering that KnowBrainer 2011 is a very small utility, it is highly unlikely that it is causing your computer to freeze. Windows freezes are far more likely to be caused by a large application such as NaturallySpeaking or failing to properly setup Windows (such as not disabling the Windows 7 UAC).

Sorry; I didn't mean to malign the product; I love it's functionality, but have learned to live without it because for me, on my machine, I was having issues when running KB2011 that I didn't have when I didn't. I have Windows 7 UAC turned off, but am running VoicePower in addition to DNS 11.5 Premium. When I say it freezes my machine, I should more accurately have said "it slows down recognition time significantly;" I assumed the issue was that it took some computing power to parse all of the commands. Could it be interactions between KB and VoicePower? I know they're supposed to play well together. ------------------------- DNS 11.5 Pro / VoicePower |

I have no conflicts we have never found any between KnowBrainer and VoicePower, nor does having both loaded slow our systems down. We've tested every new release of VoicePower with KnowBrainer and never found any conflicts or issues. Same applies to DNS 11.5 Premium and DMPE. Chuck Runquist -------------------------

Perfect; thanks. The only thing that's different for me is that I do not get blue and yellow boxes in Excel. But this works and is what I was looking for. ------------------------- DNS 11.5 Pro / VoicePower |

Can you not just use "spell mode on" / "spell mode off" to spell directly into the spreadsheet without opening the Spelling Window?

Quote: Can you not just use "spell mode on" / "spell mode off" to spell directly into the spreadsheet without opening the Spelling Window? Rog, Good point. When spelling into either the formula bar or a cell in an Excel spreadsheet, this is what I teach my clients to use because it only allows alphanumeric characters and makes spelling formulas simple and straightforward. Bill, Interesting YouTube video, but it is ancient history (way out of date). He's using DNS 8 and Microsoft Excel 2000. Some good techniques but some of the things that he points out no longer work exactly the same way. Currently, there are better ways of doing some of these things in Excel spreadsheets today (i.e., Excel 2007 & 2010 and DNS 10.1-11.5) and there are more and better Natural Language Commands for Microsoft Excel.
