I'm wanting to transcribe a number of interviews I've done for some academic work. I was going to do this through DNS 11. I've installed DNS 11 with no problems.

Created my profile: English; UK; Standard; USB microphone; Audio on disk mp3, wav.
Adapted my 4 minute talk.
Personalised my vocabulary through 'my documents'.
Then 'finish'.

However the microphone is greyed out and the hotkey doesn't work.

I've plugged my USB Logitech microphone in before DNS 11 is launched. Restarted my laptop with it in. Tried all three of my USB ports. The audio comes through the headset fine and in 'devices' it is showing up that sound is being picked up by the microphone.

Can anyone help? It's driving me mad!!!

Cheers

Jack

Thought I'd add a few more details of my laptop.

It's a Samsung RV511, Windows 7 64bit, Core i5 2.6ghz, 6gb RAM.

I'm not sure what is happening; you seem to have taken the right steps. So your situation calls for (slightly) more drastic action:

1. There might be a problem with your microphone. Exit DNS and run the Windows Sound Recorder to test whether the microphone is functional. If you have a different USB microphone, you might try that.

2. Create a new profile, choosing the "no training" option. Do not allow DNS to analyze your documents or emails. This entire process should take less than five minutes. Test again.

3. If still no audio, uninstall and reinstall DNS.

Welcome to the World’s Most Popular Speech Recognition Forum

Strange as it may sound, this is perfectly normal behavior because you created a digital recorder user profile. Nuance, in their infinite wisdom (which you may or may not agree with) deliberately disabled microphone input to prevent the end-user from accidentally corrupting their user profile with a microphone. Fortunately there's an easy workaround. If you search for the word “Recorder” in the NaturallySpeaking Quick Tips (at the top of this page) you'll find a step-by-step on how to alter the dictation source from 8 - 2 which will enable microphone input.

Hi Lunis

Just wanted to say thanks a million. This was the problem! I really don't think that dragon made it clear that was what I had to do. Or maybe I was just rushing too much and getting frustrated!

Thanks again!!!

Nuance doesn't want you to know about this. That's why we publicize the hack in the Quick Tips

Jack,

have you tried saying, "Switch to Dragon Bar," | "Profile" | "Prepare User Profile for Use"| then followed the online prompts?

You may have to run through your user training again but just follow the Wizard.
Just a thought that's all.

One other thing I would note.  Make sure you use the same USB port for your microphone as you did in your original training.

Cheers
