I would like to make my Windows 7/NaturallySpeaking 11.5 Professional computer my primary machine, but I still haven't overcome a couple issues that are deal breakers for me. Probably the biggest one right now is that spelling using the military alphabet in 11.5 is awful. The biggest problem is that it puts everything in all-caps.
I'll spell out "Dragon" using the military alphabet… DRAGON. Now if I say "letter" before spelling "Dragon"… DRAGON. I have voice commands that will let me spell using the military alphabet and a handful of common symbols, but then I have to stop, do the voice command, and start dictating again. It's inefficient and I'm having a very difficult time remembering to do it since I've been spelling the same way for the last 14 years. Overall accuracy in 11.5 seems to be improved, but for some reason the accuracy spelling with the military alphabet is significantly worse. In previous versions Dragon would rarely misrecognize the military alphabet even with extreme background noise. It seems like I'm getting only maybe 80% accuracy using military letters in this version. Is this a known, common problem with this version or is there something I can do to fix it? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Chad |

Welcome to the World’s Most Popular Speech Recognition Forum
By default, if you say correct that or spell that to open the Correction Dialog Box, anything you dictate, using the military alphabet, should default to lower case. For example, if we say spell that, we would then have to dictate cap delta-romeo-alpha-golf-november to produce Dragon. Note that the Correction Dialog Box is optional when spelling. To instantly type Dragon in your word processor try saying spell cap delta-romeo-alpha-golf-november without pausing. This will temporarily lock NaturallySpeaking into Spell Mode. -------------------------

Thanks Lunis, but I'm talking about spelling as I'm normally dictating without having to pause. As I said in my original post I really don't want to stop my dictation to use a voice command and then stop again to start dictating again. There's no reason I should have to open the correction box in order to spell something without the all-CAPS (there we go again).
I would like to be able to say something like, "I am writing a reply to LUNIS," in one utterance instead of three. Thanks, Chad |

My apologies for not fully appreciating your previous point. It seems that if you momentarily pause and then say spell-cap-lima-uniform-november-india-sierra it works correctly by producing Lunis but if you dictate an entire sentence without pausing (which is far more natural), you wind up with an ALL-CAPS version of LUNIS.
We can't recommend saying something like press cap lima because you would have to pause between every letter and frankly, you could probably type my name faster using your toes and elbows then this particular method This isn't the solution you're looking for but as a temporary workaround, when you need to spell a word, pause for a second and then say spell-cap-lima-uniform-november-india-sierra to produce my name. Hopefully this will be changed in Ver. 12. -------------------------

I think the only way (without saying spell mode on and off) is to say press Alpha, press charlie ect...
