Dictating into Philips 9600 and transcribing into DNS Premium using SpeechExec Pro. Recordings are between 3/4 of an hour and 1 & 1/2 hours, with normal commands (CAP, Tab Key, full stop etc.. New Acer 4 core computer, 64 bit, 8GB RAM, 3.4 GHz After transcribing from DS2 into Dragon pad and saving as a rich text document, DNS stops responding when correcting the document. Usually occurs after highlighting a word or phrase, and stops responding for between 20 seconds and 3 minutes, then starts responding again. Recently had a problem where incorrect words were read back, 1st letter of highlighted word was missed and 1st letter of next word was highlighted. This has now corrected itself after changing computer text size back to 100%. I only mention this in case it it relevant to the not responding issues. I have attached a dragon log and dragon set up. DNS now giving 98% accuracy, but not responding issue is very frustrating and slowing us down. I think it is a playback issue, any ideas on how to the correct this problem?

Welcome to the World’s Most Popular Speech Recognition Forum
We are not be completely certain but your recordings are probably too large for NaturallySpeaking's buffer and you are having to dip into virtual memory. We recommend cutting your recordings down to no more than 30 minutes and preferably 20 minutes if possible. If you can shorten your recordings and transcribe each part we think you'll have much better luck. When you finish, simply reconnect the chapters like a novel. We suspect that you may be in a gray area by attempting to use a consumer version of NaturallySpeaking in a professional manner. That's not to say that it can't be done but there are certain caveats. For example, if you were using the NaturallySpeaking Pro 11.5 Upgrade, you would still be better off with shorter recordings but you could embed those recordings within your document via a process called deferred correction which would allow you to study segments of the document at any given time (even months later) rather than being limited to having to play back and make corrections during a single session. Note that your dgnsetup.log attachment cannot be viewed on this forum because it has a .log extension. -------------------------

Lunis, many thanks for your prompt response. We are a small home based business preparing inspection reports on rental properties, and Premium was recommended to be sufficient for our needs. There was no mention of any size limit for the dictations. We cannot justify spending the extra money on DNS Pro, so will try reducing our dictation sizes, or put up with the not responding issues. With regard to the dgnsetup.log, what format should it be in for you to open it? |

Update Seems I spoke too soon. The original problem of DNS reading back the wrong words, and/or highlighting the incorrect text has returned. I have attached a short video of the problem. Is this also a buffer problem, or do we have serious issues with DNS playback? |

Although technically, you're clearly using NaturallySpeaking in a professional environment, with the exception of the deferred correction, Premium should be adequate for everything else and we would concur with your decision. With so many NaturallySpeaking choices, it can sometimes be a little tricky to figure out what would work best. We removed your video because it isn't necessary and eats up a lot of forum website real estate at over 6 Mb. If you would like to use a video, please just include a link to your website 01 of the numerous free sites.
Quote: The original problem of DNS reading back the wrong words, and/or highlighting the incorrect text has returned. When asking these types of questions, it is of the utmost importance that you additionally let us know what specific application you are experiencing this problem in; DragonPad, Microsoft Word, WordPerfect etc.. Are you working with a local application or over network? If you're using a localized application, such as Microsoft Word, do you have additional plug-ins engaged such as EndNote? A number of these types of add-ins are frequently incompatible with NaturallySpeaking and can cause this type of behavior. -------------------------

Thanks Lunis Our home computer is networked to a laptop, but Dragon is only used on the home computer. We are using Microsoft word 2010, and the only active add-in is NatSpeak word add-in (dgnword.dll). Same for Excel & Outlook. Dictations are transcribed onto a dragon pad, saved as a rich text document (by default) and corrections are made using playback. This is where our problems are occurring, in the playback of highlighted text. John |

Using DNS Premium 11.5, transcribing from a DS2 file to a DragonPad, saving as rich text in Word 2010, computer has 8GB RAM. Sorry to be a pest, but I have observed that our playback problems seem to be related to 'disk space reserved for playback'. If we set a low figure (200MB), we get the correction issues (DNS drops off the 1st letter of the phrase highlighted and highlights the space after the phrase) - see attached If I set a high figure (1000MB), the corrections work OK but I experience a lot of 'not responding' issues. Maybe it is a coincidence, but I thought it was worth a mention. Also, in previous posts you mention 'always preserve wave data' which I understand uses a lot of memory. Question: If we are dictating for 2 hours and have disk space reserved at 500MB, if we untick preserve wave data, will I still be able to playback the whole document while correcting? And would this make any difference to the above problems? John

If you uncheck Always Preserve Wav Data and considering that you don't have the DNS Pro deferred correction option, you may not be able to playback all of your document because you may run out of RAM. The Preserve Wav Data feature stores recordings temporarily to your hard drive for playback. We would recommend against removing this checkmark in DNS Premium.
