Inexplicably, in the course dictating over lengthy periods of time my audio quits in DNS Legal 11.5. This usually happens once or twice a day with an error message that reads: "Dragon Naturally Speaking was unable to communicate with your sound system, please check that the recording device is enabled in Windows". There is nothing that occurs in advance that would affect the communication with the sound system, so this is puzzling to say the least. In order to find a solution, I have checked all my hardware components and software, but there does not seem to be anything that would cause this. The only solution that seems to resolve this problem is to reboot the computer. Although rebooting the computer is not especially a big deal, I would like to find the problem and avoid shutting down all my work, if possible. If anyone has come across this issue, or has any suggested solutions, it would be greatly appreciated.

If you are using a USB pod, I have had that same problem on two of my old XP systems. Any interrupt with sound (calendar reminders, program sound, a website with a flash sound track, youtube etc.) knocked out the connection from the OS to the DNS/USB audio pod. I some cases changing the USB port to find the root port of the USB controller helps. However, on one of the systems with this problem I needed to disable all media/sound to minimize it including pulling the sound card and disabling on board sound in the BIOS. It no longer happened multiple times per day but even then it still happened once a week. Probably some kind of BIOS problem but I never did true root cause analysis. A few other forum members have reported this same issue but localized to one type of interrupt/media. Unplugging the USB pod, counting to 5 and replugging the USB pod worked most of the time without a reboot. Nelson, Windows periodically may lose track of your sound card. Simply remove it for few seconds, then replace and you should be good to go. MDH ------------------------- |
