So what I did was create a backup on my old machine, copy it over to the new drive and then attempted to restore it in the new DNS installation on the new computer.  Here's what happens:

First, I clicked Profile/Restore user profile and it restores from a new profile I created just to get the program up and running.  Doesn't let me choose a backup file to restore from.

Second, tried Profile/Manage User Profiles/Advanced/Import/Browse and then get the message, "The directory you have chosen does not contain valid Dragon Naturally Speaking user profiles."

I tried some variations of the above, always getting the same result.  I still have my old desktop available with the DNS installation and profile available, so I can easily access the original profile. Any ideas?

You'll find 3 step-by-step options on this procedure in the NaturallySpeaking Quick Tips (at the top of this page) when you look up “copying” as in copy your user files. It sounds like you've already tried option #3 so you might consider option #1 which simply requires copying your user profile, via Windows Explorer, from your old computer to the the 2nd computer.

John,

You can't back up a user profile on one system and then restore the backup on a new system. That simply doesn't work. In addition, you cannot import a backup user profile because it doesn't contain any references to the username. Hence, import won't find it.

Go back to your old machine and open the Manage User Profiles..., click on the Advanced button, and Export your user profile to an external hard drive or a USB thumb drive. This will copy your user profile to a folder that is named the same as your user profile. For example, if your user profile name is John Reagan, then the Export option in the advanced button dialog will copy your entire user profile to a folder named "John Reagan". When you transported to your new system, just reverse the process and select Import. Then browse till you find the folder "John Reagan" and proceed with the import.

While the backup folder does contain a complete copy of your user profile, Dragon has no way of identifying it and using the Backup option under the Advanced button in the Manage User Profiles... your backup user is not contained in a folder identified with the folder name equivalent to your user name. That's why it can't find it.

There are other ways you can do this as noted in the KnowBrainer NaturallySpeaking QuickTips. However, what I've described above Is the Way, Dragon works. It's more reliable and you will be less prone to making mistakes if you let Dragon handle the Export/Import as described above.
