PC Spec: Dragon V10 Issue: I use Dragon for just general dictation in Outlook and MS Word but have noticed some very strange incidents of late. Quite often than not the hotkeys set to control the microphone do not work, dictation accuracy is very poor and will often randomly move the cursor around a document. When closing Dragon it seems to take for ever and I am sometimes presented with - 'this application cannot close as it is being used by another programme....or words to that affect' I have found that when I have nothing open (WORD,OUTLOOK,DRAGON)they are still running on the process list in Task manager and when I try to end the process it says that the operation cannot be performed. I am quite an experienced user of Dragon and have never seen accuracy of both text and commands so bad. I get the feeling that there are permission problems at play here or some sort of other process running that is interfering. My CPU Usage is always sat on 50+ even with no apps loaded? Any advice or anyone else experienced this??

1 reason why Outlook and Word may be hanging in the Task Manager's Processes Tab is because of the NaturallySpeaking add-in (plug-in). Windows won't necessarily relinquish total control of an application in this situation but it's not anything to worry about.
As far as accuracy issues are concerned, assuming that you're launching NaturallySpeaking before Outlook and Word, we recommend re-running the Audio Setup Wizard and listing to the playback to ensure that everything is optimally set. As far as the Jumping Cursor is concerned, this can be caused by substandard accuracy with your dictation being misrecognized as commands or you may have a plug-in that doesn't agree with NaturallySpeaking. You'll find several other possible solutions, to the Jumping Cursor problem, when you look up “jump” in the NaturallySpeaking Quick Tips (at the top of this page). -------------------------

I see you are running Windows XP. Have you disabled Advanced Text Services? This will keep ctfmon.exe from launching. This application will wreak havoc with NaturallySpeaking causing jumping cursors and a myriad of other problems. To see if it is running, open Task Manager (right-click the taskbar and click Task Manager) and check the Processes tab. The simplest way to disable Advanced Text Services, is through NaturallySpeaking's Administrative Settings utility. This is probably covered in NaturallySpeaking Quick Tips, but I'll give you the instructions anyway. (I see you are using version 10, whereas I am in version 11.5. The DragonBar menus have been changed, so I'll do my best to give you the instructions from memory.) 1. On the DragonBar, click NaturallySpeaking, and then click Close Speech File. I would be curious to learn if this fixes any of your problems. Todd ------------------------- Todd Kermit |
