general question really, as i am not sure, i am also not sure whether this is too much of an ambiguous question,

how they work as opposed to a standard user prof? cache?

Danny,

You'll find that the DNS Help probably provide you with most of the information that you need about how to set up and use Roaming user profiles.

There are a couple of other sources that may be helpful. If you need them, just let me know, but the DNS Help is pretty complete as far as how to set up and use Roaming user profiles, what they are, and the various settings and approaches. You can also find information in the DNS documentation.

You'll find an abbreviated version on how to Roam your user profile when you look up “Roaming” in the NaturallySpeaking Quick Tips (at the top of this page) but as far as the purpose…

Think of running NaturallySpeaking on your desktop computer and a mobile notebook computer. Once you engage a Roaming user profile, you can open the user profiles on both computers, make changes, corrections, add new words to your vocabulary etc. and not worry about that new phrase you added to your notebook computer or the new command you wrote on your office computer. Both computers will share information with each other when you save your profile. This is one of the key reasons why DNS Pro is triple the price of Premium.
