Many of our customers have contacted us about a confusing Ver. 11.5 e-mail message about the release of NaturallySpeaking Ver. 11.5. The confusing part is that the message could easily be misinterpreted as a special offer to upgrade existing 11.0 end users to Premium 11.5 for $100. This is simply not the case. To make matters worse, 1 of our customers nearly made the mistake of purchasing the Premium 11.5 upgrade for $100 when he was already using Pro 11.5 which would have been equivalent to taking 2 steps backward. If you have any questions regarding this upgrade, contact us at (615) 884-4558, Support@KnowBrainer.com, Live Support (at the top of this page when On Line) or any Nuance licensed reseller. Here is the scoop:

Rather than just releasing a service release patch, Nuance has decided to go to Ver. 11.5 in order to introduce some new features which include:

1. IE9 support
2. Adjustable sidebar
3. Social media commands (such as the ability to instantly post to Facebook through an IM type of interface)
4. The ability to reverse the damage after utilizing
the "choose all" command (Select-&-Say correction) by saying "undo all"
5. Resizable Spell Correction Window
6. Turn your iPad or iPhone (not currently available for Android) into a wireless Wi-Fi microphone via a downloadable Dragon Remote microphone application
7. Additional iTunes command capability with Bonjour
8. "Quote That", "Bracket That", "Parentheses That" will add quotes ect. to any selected text.
9. Nuance has not yet issued a bug list fix but when the list becomes available, it will be posted on the Nuance website and here.

Please note that existing Ver. 11.0 end users can upgrade to Ver. 11.5 at no charge if you choose to download but we have been informed that the download may not be available for a few weeks and is so large that most end users probably won't be able to transfer the entire installation. For this reason, full backup DVDs will also be made available.

As usual, Nuance has engaged a staggered rollout. DNS Premium 11.0 end users can upgrade to 11.5 immediately. DNS Pro 11.0 end users will be able to upgrade to Pro 11.5 around July 5. DNS Legal 11.5 should be available on the week of July 11 but there is no word on the release of Dragon Medical 11.5 which still appears to be several months away. If you would like to receive an e-mail notification on when and where to obtain Ver. 11.5, as the rollout progresses, you can send an e-mail to Support@KnowBrainer.com and we will send you the “where and when” information as it becomes available. However, please let us know exactly what version and flavor of NaturallySpeaking you are currently using. Example: Preferred 10.1, Premium 11, Pro 9.5 etc... Also note that if you have a previous version of NaturallySpeaking (Ver. 9 or 10) many NaturallySpeaking resellers will be offering introductory upgrade pricing which loosely translates as “1/3 off the usual upgrade price” sale. The new temporary pricing is slated to begin on the week of July 4th (only a few days away).

Appreciate the information, Lunis. The IE 9 support is necessary. But unless the version 11.5 fixes the following two prominent problems introduced by version 11, no other new features really matter to me.

 (1) The latency problem;  and

 (2) The obnoxious "him, him, him, him..."  noise problem.

Looking forward to finding out.

The “him him him” is likely some form of environmental interference which wouldn't have anything to do with NaturallySpeaking but hopefully the latency issue has been resolved. Interestingly enough, Nuance has not yet published their list of bug fixes but it should be out soon.

That "him him him him" that so frequently appears is simply extraneous noise that the microphone picks up from breathing, grunting, moving around, or whatever else we do while working. I don't think that there is any real way to prevent it from happening, given the multitasking environment in which we work. I think the only real solution is to proofread carefully. Anything that I can think of that might eliminate, or at least minimize, these occurrences are also likely to slow down workflow and would reduce the fluidity that makes the program worthwhile, sort of creating a new "QWERTY” keyboard in the mind. We have enough concentration interrupters as it is, with passwords, toggle switches, etc., that serve primarily to increased levels of distraction and congestion, while contributing little if anything to productivity and accuracy. Technology fixes and tweaks can carry us only so far, and I suspect that even if we could record our thoughts as they occur, the editing problem would grow worse, not better.

I agree with Lunis. I can make the "him him him" problem come and go by changing the microphone volume in 11.0. Usually if the mic is too sensitive it happens (too much gain), or if the voice to background noise level is too low.

Not true at least in my case. I did not have that problem under version 10.0 in the identical environment. In fact, I have at least five microphones with several different sound card options, and all of them experience the same pattern:  no problem with version 10, and all have problems in version 11.  Fortunately, it only happens rarely, but it is nevertheless an obnoxious problem.  I'm certain that version 11 has messed up something internally, albeit slightly.

techlaw:

I recently developed the same him . . . him . . . him problem lately, and it came on intermittently.  Every time this problem cropped up, I would run the "check microphone" routine and the "Replay" audio at the end and I hear the disturbing hissing sound in the background.

I found out that this problem cropped up only when I was using my Samson Airline 77 wireless microphone and a wireless mouse.  I changed my microphone to Sennheiser ME3 while retaining the wireless mouse and the problem was gone.  So I suspected that my wireless mouse was interfering with my Samson Airline 77 wireless microphone signal. I confirmed this to be the case because when I pair Samson Airline 77 with a wired mouse the problem was gone.

I hope my experience on this matter helps.

Thank you very much for sharing the experience. But I wish my problem were like yours. I  tested the microphone by recording and listening back using a very high quality Sennheiser headphone. The background is as clean as it can be.

I think this problem indeed can have a diverse causes, because it does relate to hardware and background noise (after all, it is impossible to have a zero noisy environment and equipment combination). But I'm certain that the software place a role as well. For a given level of noise, the internal tuning of the software would make a difference. To me, that the version 11 is somewhat miss tuned was convincingly demonstrated because I used version 10 and version 11 in the identical environment and equipment extensively and never experienced the same problem on version 10, but experience the problem on version 11 with every microphone I tried (most being high-end microphones used on very high quality sound cards on several machines, including a laptop and a desktop with a top-of-the-line motherboard).

One very successful technique for getting rid of this problem:

Run check microphone

when you do the microphone volume test, and after it has passed, manually turn the volume down on the microphone you are using (in the recording section of the mixer) even as low as 50% of the value that DNS sets it to.

Then move on to the quality test, if it fails don't worry about it and just carry on.  If you absolutely must have DNS approval for the microphone quality test then just speak slightly louder until you pass the quality test.

Then carry on as normal.

Funny you mention that "cheat" technique. I have always used that trick as far as I can remember. My office is very quiet, and I always figured that setting the microphone level lower than normal would only benefit.

But what I was trying to say is not any of these: (1) how to work around the problem as a user; (2) demand that Nuance completely eliminate such noise related problems.  What I was trying to say was that the software can help reduce the problem, and I believe version 11 for some unknown reason does a much worse job than version 10 in doing this.

I hope that Nuance does not rationalize things so much in its own defense, but instead think more from a practical point of users. Unfortunately, the company is not known for its willingness to listen. (What do you expect when there is so little competition, and so good a product already anyway?)

Back to the main topic, according to Lunis, version 11.5 for DNS Pro should be coming out just now. Will find out what they did to it.

Yeah I am keen to know when version 11.5 professional is out either. It's past July 5th and still nothing on my updates thing. Do I need to download manually or something?

                                Welcome to the KnowBrainer Forums

Nuance has informed the reseller channel that downloads may not available for another week or 2 because it's supposed to work like a smart upgrade that requires an existing installation of Ver. 11.0. In other words a two-part process. If you would prefer a simpler solution and not to wait, we are offering FULL Backup DVDs under the previous link. Note that DNS Premium 11.5 is shipping now and Pro 11.5 is due to ship on July 11 or 12. Legal 11.5 will probably be another week.

So on your website, the item below would be the full backup disks for DNS Pro 11.5 that we can install over the top of existing 11.0 or, upon arrival, should we uninstall 11.0 and then install 11.5?

It isn't necessary to uninstall Ver. 11. Ver. 11.5 will install over the top of Ver. 11 and simultaneously upgrade your user files. Of course we haven't actually tested this theory because we're still waiting for our copy

When I try to install the 11.5 premium upgrade from the DVD on top of existing 11 Premium, the installation fails with the error message that "Another version of this product is already installed" and it says to remove the existing version.

A feature or a bug?

Edit:  Oh, that happens if you run the ...msi.  Upgrade works if you run the setup.exe. The disk did not autorun, so one has to pick the file to run.

Edit#2: Spoke too soon.  Upgrade fails because it says the installation directory where DNS is installed on my hard disk is "locked".  Aren't computers fun?  Nothing works the first time, or the first 50 times.

Edit#3: File & Folder Unlocker found that Identafone Pro was locking that directory.  Why would it do that?

G.J.,

Sometimes you can get away with running the MSI file. Most of the time you cannot if the InstallShield wizard is dependent on initializing the install, which is generally contained in the setup.exe file. Rule of thumb: always run the setup.exe. Otherwise, in many cases, you're bypassing some of the important initializations that are performed from within the setup.exe file.

Quote:
Edit#3: File & Folder Unlocker found that Identafone Pro was locking that directory.  Why would it do that?

If an application is designed to lock a particular folder or set of folders, then installs will generally not work. DNS must have access to all the folders into which it installs its files. Why that particular application does that is something that you have to take up with that applications manufacturer. Sometimes it's a, albeit stupid, default setting during the install of such. Sometimes it's an option that you have to carefully consider. Most times, software manufacturers do not make it clear as to what you need to do during the installation. Running the setup.exe from and installation DVD vs. the MSI is one example. It's not an oversight, it's simply an assumption on the part of the developer that the end-user should know this. Further, if you have DNS installed, particularly under Windows 7, but generally under all versions of Windows, AutoRun will not execute. This is typical of software installations that use the autorun.inf to initiate AutoRun vs. having and autorun.exe, as is the case with Adobe products and some Nuance imaging products. Software products that use the autorun.exe generally automatically start the installation process regardless of whether another version is installed or not. DNS uses the autorun.inf file approach, which simply means that it won't start the installation if DNS is installed and you are installing an upgrade.

Is this just for those who purchased through you, or can the rest of us poor sots get the backup DVD if we have a valid license for 11.5 premium?

Thanks

It doesn’t make any difference where you purchased your original product from. We will be happy to take care of you. It’s just the right thing to do.

Hi Lunis,

Are you shipping the 11.5 pro DVD now?

Thanks,

Matthew,

Unfortunately, Lunis can't send you what he doesn't have. DNS 11.5 Professional has not yet been released. If you go up to the Nuance store, you will see that only DNS 11.0 is available for purchase. And the only version of DNS 11.5 that is available is Premium.

Nuance ran behind on production but we were just informed that Pro 11.5 disks are being shipped to our distributors today and we should be receiving them around the middle of next week. We will hopefully be able to ship out everyone's order towards the end of next week but note that the NaturallySpeaking Legal 11.5 release has been delayed until the middle of August.

Chuck's disquisition in this thread which goes:

Quote:
In addition, in DNS 11, the change from the 11.025 kHz 16-bit Mono sampling rate to the 22.05 kHz 16-bit Mono sampling rate also increases the frequencies in background noise that can be introduced. In short, the change in the sampling rate in DNS 11 introduces more possibilities for background noise interference with the speech signal. This is one of the reasons why DNS 11 is more sensitive to interpreting background noise or inadvertent speech as a command to turn the microphone on.

could explain the over-sensitivity of Dragon version 11 over that of version 10.

In might help if you tell us what you’re using for a microphone and soundcard as not all microphones perform equally well. If your microphone seems oversensitive, rerunning the Audio Setup Wizard should take care of the issue. As additional insurance, we recommend pressing the Play button in the last stage to insure that NaturallySpeaking is only hearing your voice and not anything else, like interference.

Actually the point I make above doesn't work anyway anymore, it used to :-) (thanks Graham).  So in that case the way to do it is, speak louder than normal when you do the volume check and this will cause Dragon to set the microphone level lower than it normally would.  Then the same applies, as I said above, to the quality check.  Just ignore it or speak slightly louder to pass it.

techlaw, can't say I've seen exactly this behaviour but I take your point that I'm only treating the symptoms (albeit it seems to stop this problem of hem hem hem) as opposed to perhaps getting to the root of the problem.

Lunis, I have ordered the DVD for my DNS 11 Premium installation from you.  However, I would like to install the update now (not next week).  Is there a download available from you?  The Nuance update utility says it is still pending.

Unfortunately, your disk will arrive before we have time to create a download. One of the disadvantages of working out of a log cabin a half-mile from a country road is limited Internet access and no cell phone coverage. The only way we can create a download is to snail mail a copy to Marc, our webmaster, who can manually copy the application to the server. Also note that because of the sheer size of Ver. 11/11.5, many end users with broadband connections are unable to download an installation. We believe this is the reason why Nuance never offered Dragon Medical 10 as a download but did offer the other DNS applications. NaturallySpeaking has gotten so large that even broadband connections frequently fail.

Our current DSL connection can barely handle Vonage at 400 K. Fortunately our community has all but decimated the archaic power structure that was set up in the 50s. Power outages are not infrequent but mercifully short because we installed a 20 kW propane backup generator about 100 feet into the woods (to prevent the noise from penetrating the cabin). The good news is that since the power company is in the process of rewiring our community, they are simultaneously running fiber-optic cable for the phone company which means we should have broadband service by the end of summer.

Unfortunately there have been additional delays on the production of Ver. 11.5 disks. Here is the latest rumor:

1. Premium 11.5 is shipping now
2. Pro 11.5 should ship around July 26
3. Legal 11.5 should ship around August 2
4. Medical 11.5 is anyone's guess but the current scuttlebutt is for a September release. You can pre-order a
Backup DVD via the previous hyperlink. Note that you cannot order Medical 11.5 at this time but it will be available as an advance purchase at a discounted upgrade price shortly before it is released. If you'd like to be placed on the Medical 11.5 Pre-Announcement List, click the previous link to send us an e-mail request.

Bill,

You have to keep in mind that some time after the release of DNS 10.1 Medical, Nuance split its divisions into Retail and Medical divisions. While there is some crossover in R&D relative to the speech engine, the majority of work on DNS 11.5 Medical is not being done by the Retail division. Everything is on track according to what I've been told months ago. The only confusion has been a certain amount of delay which hasn't been adequately explained up to this point.

So, the retail versions are on track, though slightly delayed, and the upgrade patch will be available until at least Professional is out the door.

We suspect that Chuck meant to dictate “won't” rather than “will”. We frequently run up against the same DNS speak-o (misrecognition).

Okay, I give up ...

I have read about 11.5, how the download is so big, yada yada yada

I have looked on this forum, on the KnowBrainer site, and on the Nuance site. Where the #$F*$%U is the link for the download?

The download isn't available yet. When it is, you'll know. I don't know where you got the information about the download being so large, but you've been getting misinformation. Unfortunately, I'm not at liberty to discuss this publicly. But, trust me, someone is giving you a bunch of horse pucky.

Photoman,

To repeat, in a slightly different way, what Lunis and Chuck have posted.

The retail version of DNS 11.5 Premium (full copy) is released and on sale either boxed or as a download from Nuance.

The retail version of Professional 11.5 is due to be released and on sale boxed in the next few days.

The FREE downloadable (or DVD in the US) update (patch not full version) to 11.5 from 11.0 (Premium, Professional) has been delayed and will not be available until the retail Professional has been released and probably not for a little time after that.

I'm sure that the link for the download will appear here as soon as Nuance release the downloads.

Graham

Graham,

just to keep everyone confused:

Oddly enough, the (almost) free update DVDs of Professional and Legal 11.5 for users of 11.0 have been available from resellers for about a week now here in Germany. These DVDs contain full copies of the software, not just the patch, which is not downloadable yet.

This makes me scratch my head – if memory serves me right, updates for prior US/English versions used to to be rolled out well before updates for international (foreign language) versions, as well as new releases did.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to receive my copy tomorrow – this little headstart being just a fair compensation given some handicaps of the German version regarding speech commands (at least up to 11.0)…

Best, Marius

Marius,

Veeeery Interesting!  Thank you for the ammunition.

To correct myself in the previous post - DNS 11.5 Professional (Full Boxed Version) is now available in the UK.  As far as I can see the DVD free (almost) isn't (yet/if ever).

Danny,

I don't think even Nuance has any idea. It seems as though this is a case of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing.

I haven't been able to get a straight answer even going directly to the horses mouth. We'll all just have to wait, unfortunately.

RELEASE UPDATE:

Full
Backup DVD copies of DNS Premium 11.5 are available now and Pro 11.5 should be available late this afternoon for this Monday's outgoing shipments. Full box copies of Premium 11.5 and Pro 11.5 are shipping now. Legal 11.5 will probably be another week and Medical 11.5 is due to be released anytime this year (September is our best guess).

Hi Lunis,

Just to clarify re your update disk offer:

I clicked on the link above here and got to an "insurance" for $20 shopping cart page.

Was that simply a product service fee code?  Vis:  How to cost the final price for shipping to Oz?

 Cheers!

We charge $20 for the Ver. 11.5 disk which looks identical to your Ver. 11.0 disk except that it says 11.5 and additionally includes our phone number, to help distinguish it from the original. Shipping is additional but we don't know the shipping costs to Australia because those are figured out automatically before your credit card is charged. What we can tell you is that our FedEx shipping rates are about 75% lower than most other companies who use FedEx because we do a lot of shipping to Australia and FedEx didn't want us to change over to the Postal Service. Our FedEx representative, Guido, made us an offer we couldn't refuse.

Still happy to have the DVD backup service despite the DNS Pro 11.5 download being posted by Nuance.  In my opinion the money I spent was well spent.

The advantage of the Backup DVD is that you don't have to install Ver. 11.0 and then follow up with the patch. You can install everything from 1 disk on your next computer.

Upgrade of Pro 11.0 to 11.5 via Check for upgrades under Help menu was fine on my laptop.   But the copy of DNS Pro 11.0 on my work PC does not display the Check for upgrades option in the Help menu (?  because I don't have admin rights on this machine).   Now kicking myself for choosing the Install rather than the Download Now option when I installed on the laptop.   Where to go from here?  Uninstall 11.5 from the laptop and hope Check for Upgrades appears again so I can download and save before installing?  Thanks. I received the update notice when I booted up my computer just after lunch today. The 11.5 Professional service pack downloaded in about 4 min., and installation occurred without incident. I have not yet used it very much to have an opinion about what it improves aside from the documented bug fix to the Acrobat X problem that I recently began experiencing.

Now that it is out, does anyone have a more detailed list of bug fixes other than the three issues explicitly mentioned in the Release Notes?

same here. On my wireless system, it took 10 min and then practically nothing to install the file.

Does anyone know where the download file is stashed? Or does Nuance delete the file once it is installed?

Just downloaded and installed the DNS Professional 11.5 update with absolutely no problems. Haven't got time to test this much, but right off hand, I'm glad to report the following:

(1) it works flawlessly on Internet Explorer 9;

(2) there is absolutely no latency; and

(3) this is a big one to me: even with my very limited experience, it is already very obvious that version 11.5 has much better noise rejection ability. I haven't used it long enough to conclude that the obnoxious"him, him, him, him..." problem is completely fixed, but I'm very certain that 11.5 is much better at rejecting background noise than 11.0.  I intentionally turn on the "result box" just to see what is going on. Previously, with version 11, I observed frequent activities in the "result box" even when I was not speaking at all. Although in most cases the activities would not result in any text, the software was too busy and occasionally demanded "please speak again". Now with veteran 11.5, it is much less busy and with much cleaner background activities. It seems that the only time the software displays the annoying "please speak again" without any speech input is when I intentionally touch the microphone to make some noise.

So far, very very pleased.

I'm not sure if the description "better ability to reject background noise" is accurate, as it would suggest that there is some ambient noise and version 11.5 is good at rejecting the noise. That is not the case. My microphone system is very clean. If I use a voice recording program such as Audacity to record the baseline noise, I would practically hear nothing using a set of high-quality monitor headphones.  So I always suspected that something was messed up in version 11 because it manages to generate (or amplify?) some background noises. Whatever it is, I'm very glad that this has been fixed in 11.5.

Bill,

The download is stored wherever you want it. Read the technote:

DNS 11.5 update patch technote

If you select install, the update extract files and stores them in a temporary folder. If you select download, you get the normal Microsoft Download prompt and you can save it anywhere you wish. Nevertheless, review the technote because it not only explains everything as far as accessing the update patch, it's filename, and all of the new added features and bug fixes.

techlaw,

There may have been some slight tweaks to the Codex associated with the Audio Setup Wizard (Check Microphone), but turning the microphone has nothing to do with noise rejection. Noise canceling/noise suppression, etc. is solely a function of your microphone/soundcard. Any improvements in the Check Microphone might improve volume adjustment, but noise rejection is not one of them. I suspect that part of what you are observing is possibly some improved performance, but any thing else is pure conjecture.

Chuck, I think you may have a much more exact and scientific definition of "noise cancellation". But from a pure user point of view, I have to partially disagree on this one: noise cancellation is purely a function of microphone/soundcard.  I had believed in the same thing before version 11, but I have learned from 11, and now more convincingly from 11.5 that the "apparent noise cancellation" also has to do with the software. I don't know how they do it (or how they can mess up), but this is clear to me based on the observation (come on, Chuck, seeing dramatic cut-downs in background activities in the "result box" and unwanted "hims" without making any change in hardware can't be a mere conjecture, but if it is, I'm glad to have such power :-)

I now recall a few versions ago, NaturallySpeaking introduced a feature that rejected the utterances like "um" and "ah" not meant as dictation. I'm not suggesting this is the same thing here, but it is clear that the algorithm may have a hand on noise rejection (and alternatively does also present mess-up opportunities, to which version 11 did lend itself).

techlaw,

What you're referring to is called Nothing But Speech (NBS), which was originally developed developed by L&H and first Incorporated into L&H VoiceXpress. When Dragon Systems was acquired by L&H In may of 2000 and when L&H VoiceXpress and DNS were subsequently merged in DNS 6.0, Nothing But Speech (NBS) became a part of Dragon. NBS has undergone a number of improvements over the versions since DNS 6.0. Initially it was felt that Nothing But Speech (NBS) was too aggressive. As such, it was made less sensitive. When Dragon was acquired by ScanSoft, now Nuance, the developers continued to work on this feature but never really achieved an optimal balance in terms of functionality.

If you see a dramatic improvement, that may in fact be part of any improvements made in DNS 11.5. That is, Nuance may have improved or found an optimal balance for Nothing But Speech (NBS). However, Nothing But Speech (NBS) is not noise canceling. It is basically a word filter. If any active or passive noise canceling were developed and directly applied to Dragon NaturallySpeaking, I would think that Nuance would jump all over the opportunity to publicize such. Regardless, I doubt seriously that there's any noise canceling that has been directly implemented in DNS itself other than improvements in Nothing But Speech (NBS). If it were, it would be applied within the Audio Setup Wizard (Check Microphone), and I don't see any indication of that taking place in DNS 11.5. There is no difference in the graphical display when running the Quality Check test on any of my microphones between DNS 11.0 and DNS 11.5, and this is where it would be applied. Besides, virtually all the attempts at implementing noise canceling software have failed miserably up to this point, and this includes the latest and greatest from Andrea that is coupled with their Andrea PureAudio USB-SA.

If you search on "copyright" in the Dragon Help, you will find the following list of Dragon copyrights.

"Nuance, the Nuance logo, ScanSoft, Dragon, DragonBar, the Dragon logo, NaturallySpeaking, RealSpeak, Nothing But Speech (NBS), Natural Language Technology, Full Text Control, BestMatch, MouseGrid, and Vocabulary Editor are registered trademarks or trademarks of Nuance Communications, Inc. On the other hand, users who are or were experiencing strings of "him him him him him", or other repetitive displays of text or unusual behavior of that type, are usually suffering from electronic interference being introduced into the audio output.

I don't question your experience or the differences in behavior that you are experiencing relative to DNS 11.5, but these are not coming from any inherent noise canceling introduced into the software itself.

I received a call from Nuance today, informing me that they had updates to Dragon, and that on Monday there will be some really great prices. I suggested that the update should be free, as I have the previous latest version. After a pause, she agreed that I was correct, so much for that sale, but did not ask if she could route me to customer support, or mention how I could download it.

She then launched into plan B: Nuance has partnered with Philips and Plantronics to introduce a new blue tooth mic. I said I was set for mics, but before I could hang up she told me that "the guys" told her the new mic was far more accurate than the USB sound pods and wired mics which I use.

Guess Nuance pays for marketing, at least...

Best regards... Verne

We considered the last Plantronics Calisto Bluetooth microphone to be unacceptable, removed it from our website and dumped the remaining units on Amazon. The only other Plantronics microphones we see are the Voyager and Discovery models which are not well-suited to speech recognition. You might want to take that advice with a grain of salt. Assuming that a new Plantronics Bluetooth microphone is on the horizon, which we doubt, you would still be limited by the current protocols which included a 4000 Hz frequency ceiling. With that in mind, we don't see how any new Bluetooth microphone could be much improved. Just our $.02

I have ver 11 Premium. When I click on "Check for Updates" under "help" nothing happens. Is there another way to get the 11.5to download? Do I need to reinstall my Ver 11 to get the Updates to work? Any suggestions?

Thanks

Joel

This may be a temporary snafu that could be resolved later this evening when the Nuance server isn’t so busy or your firewall may be preventing NaturallySpeaking from looking for the update. You might try temporarily disabling your firewall. However, if you are unable to download the service release patch, we offer a full copy Backup DVD option.

I appreciate the answer so quickly. The possible issue is that when I click on the "check for updates" nothing happens. It does not try to connect or anything.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Yes I did and it made no difference. This was at my office.

I also did a fresh install on a different computer (laptop),  and at home turned off firewall and antivirus and ran the program and the same thing happens.

I click on the update and nothing happens.

Any other ideas?

thanks

Your other option would be to purchase a Backup DVD which will arrive in a KnowBrainer neoprene padded bag.

I am a registered user of DNS 11.0

Running Windows 7 ultimate edition

I appear to have missed out on the e-mail from Nuance about upgrading to version 11.5.  I have searched their website can find lots of information about version 11.5 but cannot find the link to download the upgrade (free) upgrade to 11.5.  Anybody help?

Cheers

Birtleyboy,

Nuance is no longer providing free updates or upgrades as they did with DNS 9.5 and DNS 10.1. There are now only providing upgrades or updates via the "Check for Updates" from the Help menu in the DragonBar. The DNS 11.5 upgrade/update is a service pack release.

The primary reason for this is that it became too expensive to provide the additional FTP site and support the multiple versions and language additions. In addition, the full version updates that were available for DNS 9.5 and DNS 10.1 were excessively large. The bean counters presented the costs for doing this to the upper-level management and Nuance and not surprisingly they flipped out. Therefore, Nuance is not going to do this again, EVER. From this point forward all updates will be provided only through the "Check for Updates".

If your version of DNS 11 is installed properly, you should be able to click on the "Check for Updates" in the DNS Help menu and you will be taken to the first update screen.

However, there are a couple of caveats and you need to be careful when accessing the update:

1. Make sure that you select download and not install. If you select install, the service pack release will be downloaded to a temporary file, which is exceedingly difficult to find, commenced the install (upgrade), and then delete the temporary folders and files once the update is completed. If you have problems with the update, and some users have had such along with the fact that the update can't close certain files that are open if Dragon is loaded. This can result in either a failure of the update, or, at best, you're being required to reboot your system after the upgrade is complete.

2. If you ensure that you have downloaded the file, the file has the following file name: DNS11ServicePack1.exe. Locate the file and then close Dragon NaturallySpeaking 11.0 completely. Go to the service pack file noted above and double-click on it. This will more reliably install the service pack.

3. Once the service pack is installed you will not see any change to the shortcut icon on your desktop and it will still read Dragon NaturallySpeaking 11.0. However, if you click on the Dragon icon to launch Dragon NaturallySpeaking and once it is launched with your user profile loaded, clicking on the Help | About NaturallySpeaking from the DragonBar, the splash screen should display the following version number.

11.50.100.092 SP1.

If so, then the service pack is installed. If not, close Dragon NaturallySpeaking again and repeat the upgrade process noted in #2 above.

Lastly, note that one of the reasons why DNS 11.0 users are not notified about the update is because they have removed the checkmark from the checkbox either during install or via the Administrative Settings to "Automatically check for updates on Windows startup."

Hi Chuck and fellows,

I have already previously mentioned that I do not have the option of checking for updates in my version 11, but even more mysteriously as I went to follow through on the quote below :

I can't find any point where I may have had the option to cancel this. As that famous cat once said "curiouser and curiouser". it may all be simply a result of getting much closer to 100 years of age than 30, or I have fallen down the rabbit hole. :-)

me2,

First, you're KnowBrainer profile says DNS 11 Preferred, which is actually Premium but that's beside the point. However, there's no reason why you shouldn't have an option for Check for Updates in your DragonBar Help. Obviously, something is rotten in Denmark here.

However, the question that I have is did you purchase DNS 11 Premium as an OEM bundle or special purchase from a Nuance partner/hardware manufacture. If you did, you purchased a copy of DNS 11 that can't be updated.

Review the following link, especially under IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

http://nuance.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/6213

During the install of DNS 11 there is a checkbox, which is checked by default, for automatically checking for updates on Windows startup. If you by any chance removed the checkmark from this checkbox, then you simply wouldn't be prompted for the update. However, that shouldn't prevent "Check for Updates" showing up in your DragonBar | Help menu. The only reason that option doesn't show up if your version of DNS doesn't qualify as specified in the link above.

In addition, the setting for automatically checking for updates is also in the Administrative

I'm not drawing the conclusion that you don't have an updatable version of DNS 11 Premium. I'm simply pointing out possible reasons why you can't update. There are always other possibilities, but we have to go through them one by one in order to try and figure out why can't access the update.

Another possibility is that if you can locate the InstallShield software manager, you can always run that, which automatically checks for updates for any applications using InstallShield wizard for installation and most applications do use it. Unfortunately, it's difficult to find if you're using Windows XP but easier to find if you're using Windows 7 as you are.

Hi Chucker,

Thank you for your most unwelcome information, though prompt and obviously correct.

Arrghhh! (manually inserted) they had done some pretty sneaky things over the years, but this one actually takes the cake! If only there was some other option out there in the market!

I did purchase the last upgrade here in Australia from a very large soft/hardware house which was offered as a special, but there was certainly no mention anywhere any time any place that it was a dead end.

I will attempt to talk to Nuance and complain bitterly because this takes underhanded tactics to a new level. However from prior experience over many years with this company, my options really seem to be reduced to having to buy a new copy.

My current version 11 has developed some peculiar errors such as commencing any replaced text with a capital and never adding the customary space after a replacement by verbal editing. So I was going to do a reinstall anyway.

Thank you Chucker for your very helpful post.  I now appear to be up and running with version 11.5.
I've only just started using it of course, but I have not noticed any difference yet?

Best wishes to all
