I have migrated to a new computer, and installed NaturallySpeaking 9 on the new PC.  What user files do I need to transfer over to the new computer and what is the best way to do it, presumably using an external hard drive?  Thanks a lot for any assistance.

Greg,

CLICK HERE for directions to create a new user and Export / Import Words and Macros from the previous user.

Alternatively you can just copy your Current files to the new installation. My Current folder is at:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Nuance\NaturallySpeaking9\Users\Martin Markoe\current

If you can't see or access the folder you need to go to Control Panel, Folder Options, View tab, Show Hidden files and folders.

Martin

I migrated my entire user file to a thumb drive.  It has become quite large after adding the KB medical vocabulary and after adding my own phrases/words to my custom vocabulary.  The "Current" file, for instance, is now 181 MB and the entire user file is 245 MB.--it no longer fits on my supposedly 250 MB thumb drive.  Could the user file actually be this large or have I somehow gotten extra garbage in it?

  Thank you,

 Rayk

I just found a post from KB that the large size was normal, but if I did not plan to run the Acoustic Optimizer, I could put a check mark in Options --> Data --> Conserve disk space required by user files (for portability).  I plan to search the forum about the pros and cons of using the Acoustic Optimizer.  But (epecially if the answer is a clear-cut yea or nay), I would be grateful for your opinion.

 Thank you,

Rayk

Putting a checkmark in the Options | Data | Conserve disk space required by user files (for portability) has no impact whatsoever on running the Acoustic and Language Model Optimizer.  The data that is stored for the Acoustic and Language Model Optimizer is not impacted by selecting this option.

In addition, one of the primary functions of the Acoustic and Language Model Optimizer is equivalent to defragging your system registry.  It removes redundant and less than optimal information from your speech models and retains the best speech models configuration.  You can choose to run it or not run it, but if you don't run it, you lose the benefit and you run the risk of your user files becoming bloated to the point where performance & accuracy can begin to degrade.  The same thing happens if you don't periodically optimize (defrag) your system registry.  Eventually Windows slows down to a crawl and you begin having problems with your applications running properly.

Hi Chuck - I am confused - do you recommend running the Acoustic and Language Optimizer regularly?  I thought that Knowbrainer says that running this more than once decreases accuracy.

 thanks very much

KnowBrainer has a very good handle on DNS, but KnowBrainer has never seen the code or been a part of the development of DNS.  Regardless, KnowBrainer was not referring to the Acoustic and Language Model Optimizer.  KnowBrainer was referring to general training, which should never be done more than twice.  In fact, if accuracy isn't optimal after any initial general training (i.e., one time) then there is something wrong with your user and/or your hardware.  If you run the general training a second time and accuracy still doesn't improve, further training is useless and will definitely degrade user accuracy even further.  If accuracy is not good right out-of-the-box or after 1 initial general training, then your user is no good and further training will never improve it.

As to how frequently the Acoustic and Language Model Optimizer should be run, my recommendation is that it should be run at least once every 2 weeks.  However, I generally run it once a week, just like I optimize my Windows system registry once a week.  How often you run it is really a matter of personal preference.

I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but, I am not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

If you are using a UniVoice vocabulary profile you can probably delete 24 of the 25 vocabularies that you don't use.  This can help limit your user size but it might be easier to simply purchase a larger thumb drive.  Although a 250 Mb thumb drive often works, we do not recommend anything less than 512.  Thumb drives are now very inexpensive and range up to 4 Gb.  The simple solution is often the path of least resistance.

Thank you for the helpful information about the optimizer and about portability.

 I have two questions:

1)  Twice I attempted to run the Acoustic and Language Model Optimizer with the same results.  After the optimizer worked for about 30 min., it finished, then said something like, adapting user files, followed by the comment "Status: terminating adaptation" accompanied by a DNS pop-up window that said "Acoustic archive data is not valid."  What could be wrong?

 2)  If I check the box to conserve space in the user files for portability, what am I sacrificing?

 Thanks again.
