To whom it may concern: What is the latest version of the Verbal Basic Manual? Is it dated this year?

Both VerbalBasic and the VerbalBasic manual received a major rewrite in KnowBrainer 2008. One change we made was to move the VerbalBasic manual out of KnowBrainer and into the download section of our web site so that it would always be up-to-date. However, it isn't necessary to surf to the download section of our web site. You can also open the VerbalBasic manual by saying Open VerbalBasic Manual or How Do I Write Commands. Whenever we make a change to the VerbalBasic manual we immediately upload it to the web site.

What is the latest Verbal Basic manual?

I think mine is a couple years old.  I'm studying it now and hope most of it still applies.

Thanks.

Although we haven't updated the VerbalBasic Manual in some time, we keep it as a PDF file online so that whenever we make a change, it'll always be updated. We are also planning on adding the VerbalBasic manual and our latest NaturallySpeaking installation guide to the KnowBrainer Help menu which will also be stored online.

Only a few days ago, we found out that launching KnowBrainer produces
Error ‘5’ on Windows 7. After a little experimenting we discovered that Windows 7 users who don't lower their UAC (User Account Control) settings to Never notify, can no longer run KnowBrainer so we added this information to the NaturallySpeaking Quick Tips (at the top of this page) and every installation guide. Fortunately, killing the miserable UAC is a good idea for everyone.

Have either the Verbal Basic or KnowBrainer manuals been updated in the last 8 months or so?

I just want to make sure I'm studying the latest info.

Thanks.

No major updates to the VerbalBasic manual but while we were exhibiting in Las Vegas, last January, at the CES convention (at least that's what we told the Big Haired Lady), we rewrote the KnowBrainer manual and added NaturallySpeaking basic, intermediate and advanced training chapters. We just e-mailed you the latest copy

A pair of tricked out Glock 27 .40 caliber (6 15 round clips) standard FBI issue gently nestled in a Stone Mountain glove leather dual crisscross classic detective style holsters with Crimson laser sights, easy cock interior Teflon coated with a 2.5 pound trigger pull (adjusted down from the default 4 pound setting). She prefers standard police issue hollow points but substitutes 1 Israeli rubber bullet for the 1st round because she says it's more fun. That's when I stopped asking questions…

To Lunis: Since I now have Windows 7, how would I download the verbal basic manual in its present state?

Changing your operating system has no effect on viewing KnowBrainer manuals. Either say How Do I Write Commands or click VerbalBasic Manual as you always have

I'm sorry to have to say this, but I really can't make heads or tails of the verbal basic. In many sections it seems like there is simply a dump of examples with no real explanation as to what the examples show. It just leaves you guessing.

(As a side note, DNS consistently misinterprets "show verbal basic manual" as "show purple place". Evidently I have something on my computer called "purple place".)

Page 1: preliminary – I understand that verbal basic is a macro toolbox and that is going to orally write commands. That's good, that's why I bought DNS Pro. I want to write DNS commands.

Hierarchy – I need to become familiar with the DNS command hierarchy. Great – I want to write DNS commands.

Page 2: the example of a boilerplate text command. I'll skip this – not relevant to me. I live in a Web 2.0 world, and I'm not really looking to do word processing. Also, I want to write DNS commands, not just do boilerplate text.

Page 4: keystroke examples – what is this? What is the relationship of verbal basic to Visual Basic as used in DNS? What is the knowbrainer Command Browser and why would I want to use it? And given that I'm going to orally write commands, how am I possibly going to type in any of these examples?

Page 5: loop examples – what is this? Doesn't Visual Basic have perfectly good looping constructs? Is it really practical to be typing these things?

Page 7: keystroke commands – how does this relate to the keystroke examples on page 4? This is just a list of gobbledygook. There is no explanation as to what I'm supposed to do with the stuff, where or how I'm supposed to use it, or what it's supposed to do. Presumably it's different somehow from what I saw on page 4.

Anyways, the manual just continues like this – just dumps of code fragments. Really very little or no explanation as to what to do with it, where to use it, how the parts relate, or how to put it all together.

your profile states that you are using DNS Standard.

The VerbalBasic Manual is a guide for verbally creating macros in KnowBrainer; not NaturallySpeaking. However, if you're using DNS Pro, you should check out Larry Allen’s 120 page Scripting for Dragon NaturallySpeaking 11 guide which is nothing short of phenomenal if you want to write commands in DNS Pro and we would recommend this approach if you have DNS Pro.

If you could let us know you're trying to accomplish or give us an example, we could probably direct you to the right area or possibly even create an example command for you.

I have updated my profile. I have DNS Pro 11.5, Knowbrainer, VoicePower, the $50 manual on how to write macros for DNS, and I just ordered the headset that Lunis says is the very best along with the USB soundcard.

At one level I would just like to understand what knowbrainer does for somebody who wants to program macros. I'm sorry, I have spent a lot of time reading the verbal basic manual from start to finish, and it just doesn't offer much in the way of explanation. It does not give you an overall context. Much of the manual is simply lists of commands.

On another level, I can say that it seems like all of the packages, DNS, knowbrainer, and voice power are written for the pre-Internet world. I simply don't use a lot of desktop applications. I didn't even purchase Microsoft Office when I bought my laptop. I use the web extensively, and most of that is Web 2.0.

Here's a quick example of how to write a global Print Document command which already exists in KnowBrainer:

1. Say
New Global Command
2. Say
Print Document when prompted to name your command
3. Place your cursor in the large empty box and say
send system keys control p or send system keys control papa (if you know your emergency alphabet)
4. Without moving the cursor, say wait 1000
5. Without moving the cursor say
send system keys enter to produce the following script:

SendSystemKeys "{Ctrl+p}"
Wait 1000
SendSystemKeys "{Enter}"

I also found it a bit of a challenge to derive from the manual how convenient it is to script in KnowBrainer. The points made previously by mahaines... Were stumbling blocks for me, as well, but I seem to have gotten past them. I had KB 2008 only a few months when my DNS 9.5 install became corrupt.  I wasn't able to fix it up, didn't use DNS again until a few weeks ago on the $99 upgrade from premium to premium 11.5 . This time, it took me a few hours to get it, and I expect to be net ahead on productivity in a few days. I could get Pro, but would rather use KB, I think. Kudos on your product. The manual could always be better. Couldn't they all? This one seems pretty good to me.
