My transition to UniVoice 9.5 (Preferred). EDIT: This procedure based on fact that I have KB2007 installed. If you don't have KB2007 installed go to step 3. If you have KB2006, read the posts below by Triona below and also read the LINKS that I provided in responses to Triona: This may help others. I will edit post as I proceed. I'm sure there are better ways to do it. 1) Backed up C:\Program Files\KnowBrainer2007\KB8.mdb 2) Uninstalled KB2007 3) Backed up all my user files to another location: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Nuance\NaturallySpeaking9\Users\(user file name) 4) Exported my custom vocab to text file: (DNS File Menu) Words, Export 5) Installed KB2007/UniVoice 9.5 Preferred EDIT 5.25) After fresh install of KB2007 I like to copy/rename the "fresh" KB8.mdb file just to have a backup "virgin" one. EDIT 5.5) Restored my backup KB8.mdb file 6) IMPORTANT: Immediately after installation, I made a copy of the UniVoice_Preferred_9.5 file. This way I always have a "fresh" copy that I can copy again, rename, and reuse so I don't need to reinstall. This is good if user file gets corrupted or if I want an extra UniVoice user file. 7) With UniVoice file installed, on first usage of file I was prompted to and I ran the Audio Setup to set volume levels and check sound output EDIT 7.5) SAVE USER FILE 8) IMPORTANT: With this fresh UniVoice user I went to Words, View/Edit, Display Custom words only. The list below will be displayed for custom words that was preinstalled. Here it is and what a BIG improvement this is over the last version of UniVoice. Thank you (don't need all those old words): “\Left Quote 9) EDIT: I RECOMMEND LEAVING THESE WORDS IN. I deleted "com" and had some problems stated below. It may affect the algorothims to delete these. Maybe, maybe not. All I know is "com" works for me now after I used a "fresh" UniVoice file without deleting this list. I merely imported my own word list in next step below without deleting. Also the curly quotes is nice to have. Edit, delete, modify this list as desired. I erased everything as I have left/right quotes in my exported list already. 10) Words, Import to import the previously exported custom word list in #4 above. SAVE USER. 11) Restored my DNS commands from old UniVoice user to new one : C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Nuance\NaturallySpeaking9\Users\(your username)\current MyCmds.dat file in Windows XP You cannot open the MyCmds.dat file but this is where NaturallySpeaking stores your macros. 12) Set your options using Tools, Options. I didn't use the options.ini file method because I wanted to see what options UniVoice had selected. I modified DragonBar to task tray, I disabled "Insert two spaces after period." MOST IMPORTANT: I unchecked "Automatically add words to vocabulary." This thing is HIDEOUS. SAVE USER FILE.
13) Now I'm just testing it out, and retraining as needed for DNS/KB commands and phrases as needed. This is where the KnowBrainer command Add to Vocabulary is so productive and time saver. 14) Backup this user file so I don't have to run all these steps again. I've always have had great luck and great ease with UniVoice with myself and others. I love it. I find it very accurate overall and quick to get productive every time I set up a new fresh UniVoice user. This is where I'm at so far. Hope it helps others a bit. ------------------------- 111MacBook Pro, Mac Pro, or Mac Mini --> OS X Leopard --> VMware Fusion --> XP SP2 Home --> KnowBrainer 2007 Command Software, DNS 9.5 Preferred, Steelcase Leap Chair. Interestingly, the "com" just doesn't work for me. However, web addresses with dot com work fine. I did notice that com was in the custom word list for UniVoice install. See previous post. EDIT: Once I reinstated a "fresh/virgin" UniVoice file without deleting the supplied custom words I did not have any more problems. "com" was recognized IMMEDIATELY. I have many KB VerbalBasic commands: Edit Com, Pace Com, Copy Com, etc. Usually with a new DNS or UniVoice user I just train com, calm, or the command phrase either through Notepad or "edit vocabulary". Presto bingo, works great. With this upgrade, it just wouldn't take. Strange. I'd even train it ok, but the command would not "fire". It will dictate "edit com" etc. I tried written/spoken form: no worky worky. Whatever. . . No big deal. Just used the new KB2007 feature and changed the names back to Edit Command etc (BEST REASON TO UPGRADE TO KB2007). I'll end up probablby renaming it some other one syllable word that I find will work like Edit Bee or Edit Lo or whatever works with my voice with consistency and least strain. EDIT: I forgot the saying, but "Find the good from failures or problems. . .?" Anyway, I found Edit Co, Pace Co (easier to say than Paste), Copy Co work awesome and for me it's even easier to say than "com". So it all worked out. I don't fight it. . . Just find what works and move on. So far so good otherwise. Don't really know why I bothered upgrading. My "old" UniVoice worked awesome for me. "Latest and greatest" syndrome I guess . . .We'll see. I can always use the old one. I must say that UniVoice still requires some ongoing training and correction. It's just that I find it's much quicker for me to get a usable and highly accurate user file with UniVoice than with standard DNS user file. On a whole I don't need to add to many words or phrases to my vocabulary because my accuracy is so good already. Most corrections are for non-recognition reasons but more logic/algorithm ones: homonyms, technical writing, etc. But that's always the case I suppose no matter what. ------------------------- 111MacBook Pro, Mac Pro, or Mac Mini --> OS X Leopard --> VMware Fusion --> XP SP2 Home --> KnowBrainer 2007 Command Software, DNS 9.5 Preferred, Steelcase Leap Chair. I cannot get the program to install. When I get to synchronization button it tells me it can't find a KB2005 file to synchronize with. I then tried to follow Rockinout's guideline including uninstallingKB 2007 and got the same results.
I do have KB2006 installed. As always, looking forward to your input. Thanks so much for another freebie! One of the reasons you have such a loyal fan base. Thanks so much. ------------------------- Triona |

Triona, I don't know if you've taken a look at this "KnowBrainer 2007 Goes Gold" thread yet: There's directions that you should follow in the first post by Lunis: It has to do with Sync-ing. If you haven't done already, I'd recommend reading the whole thread for tips. If it asks you to sync during the install: Say no, then sync after the installation per the directions in the linked thread. Just make sure you back up your KB8.mdb files and original UniVoice user files before you do anything. 1 ------------------------- 111MacBook Pro, Mac Pro, or Mac Mini --> OS X Leopard --> VMware Fusion --> XP SP2 Home --> KnowBrainer 2007 Command Software, DNS 9.5 Preferred, Steelcase Leap Chair. Thank you for getting back to me so quickly, RockinOut, I wonder if I am to click it and the KB 2007 folder!
when I cut and pasted : kb8UBackUp.mdb into KB 2006 I did not get a prompt to say yes to an overwrite. I don't know if that makes any difference.
just went through all the steps again. Same thing.what ever I did come up I am using both UniVoice 9.5 and KB2007!!

Thank you, RockinOut,
Followed your instructions to a tee. Everything is running however when I opened KB 2007, I got a pop-up that said there was an arrow with a command. I guess my question is how I know everything is running okay? Any idea? I will import MyCommands that I have saved. Appreciate your help very much. Jim ------------------------- Triona |

Quote: I really love UniVoice9.5. One quick question. Does it have the 15,000 word vocabulary? I wanted to save some time of waiting be installation if necessary. The Medium (50,000 word) and Small (2,000 word) KnowBrainer vocabulary is included with KnowBrainer 2007. Look here for the files and directions: EDIT #2: I changed pic to a more accurate one that displays the folder drive pathway at C:\Program Files\KnowBrainer2007\Extra:
You will probably want to search 50,000 on this forum, and read all the related threads for more information, thoughts, opinions, tips, and perspectives. The KnowBrainer medium vocab definitely has it's place. The medium vocab is not installed by default in your UniVoice 9.5 install. ------------------------- 111MacBook Pro, Mac Pro, or Mac Mini --> OS X Leopard --> VMware Fusion --> XP SP2 Home --> KnowBrainer 2007 Command Software, DNS 9.5 Preferred, Steelcase Leap Chair. It may not have been a good idea for me to delete the custom word list that came with UniVoice. I EDITED the posts above in BOLD. Who knows why, and I really don't care. All I know is that now "com" is recognized right away. When I originally deleted it, it would not work right with any of my commands despite re-adding to Vocab Editor and training and retraining. Regardless I'm still using "co" for my commands 'cause it's easier. Also for people who have never had this feature before, the curly quotes are a nice to have pre-installed with UniVoice. It's not a big deal to do it manually, just follow the directions in KnowBrainer's Quick Tips PDF or search this site. Still nice to have though. ------------------------- 111MacBook Pro, Mac Pro, or Mac Mini --> OS X Leopard --> VMware Fusion --> XP SP2 Home --> KnowBrainer 2007 Command Software, DNS 9.5 Preferred, Steelcase Leap Chair. Look at your serial number. If your serial number begins with 961 (46 Mb), you are using the version of UniVoice without specialty vocabularies and if your serial number begins with 962 (228 Mb), you are using the version of UniVoice with the specialty vocabularies. Our download page includes information on which download you need.
