Every so often DNS goes to sleep and when it does it sleeps hard.  That happened again this morning and here is that part of the DNS log that shows it has decided to do something on its own:

10:05:18 Previous lock from E:\work\1150rel_mob\vdct2\mdhidwnd.cpp(134)

10:06:16 Time out waiting for PhraseFinish!

What confuses me here is that I do have an E: but I do not have a E:\work directory on that drive.  The E drive is simply used for continuous backup data files.

Could someone explain what a previous lock is?

Bill,

The line to which you refer simply means that DNS can't find an available core for processing your speech (usually BestMatch IV). Therefore it has to be resubmitted, which is what those lines mean. Basically, it's just that the speech buffer has locked the utterances which DNS is trying to resolve and is waiting for an available core to process such.

Don't pay any attention to the E: drive. That is simply a temporary RAM drive created in memory to store the information that DNS uses for recognition. It doesn't refer to any of your physical drives and the drive letter is automatically assigned by DNS for this purpose.

Once DNS is done processing your speech, the temporary RAM drive is deleted. DNS takes care of itself in this regard and you don't need to pay any attention to that.

thanks Chuck.  Your usual complete answer!  That is surprising that DNS is waiting for a core.  As you may have noted I have a 4 core i7 - 960  3.2 GHz processor but I suppose that even it can be busy at times.  But I have to ask, is there any way to avoid these "locks".  It seems like an eternity when you're waiting for DNS to wake up and allow dictation.
