After having been away from dictation for some time, partly because of frustration about how poorly and slowly my DNS10 was working, I returned and began using DNS 11 (and now DNS 11.5 in the last few weeks).

I have been using Dragon NaturallySpeaking 11.5 software supposedly in conjunction with KnowBrainer 2010, or so I believed. It is not clear that the KnowBrainer software is functioning, as some of the special commands which it has (and that are not present in Dragon) do not appear to function.

When I click on the KB2010 icon in the Quick Launch area of the task bar, it goes through the usual “KB2010 Rev A” launch splash screen. Then it launches the DNS header and disappears, except for appearing as an icon in the right end (notification area) of the taskbar and being present in the Windows Task Manager applications list.

However, the command set of KnowBrainer does not appear to be available and any KB (non-Dragon) commands issued (such as “bottom” or “start paragraph&rdquo are entered as text.

On the other hand, DNS appears in the task icons in the middle of the taskbar, but does not appear in the Windows Task Manager applications list.

When I then close Dragon from its header bar, it leaves KB2010 icon in the Task Manager list, I need to check, but it may stay there even after shutdown.

I am on a Gateway GT5220 with 4GB RAM running Windows XP SP2 (as I was before this trouble started) using a Senheiser ME3 headset run through an Andrea USB sound pod.

NOTE

I see that, in the programs folder under the start menu, entries appear for KnowBrainer 2006, KnowBrainer 2008, and KnowBrainer 2010, both as folders under programs, and as one kilobyte shortcuts within each of those folders. None of those folders contain uninstall programs. Only in the KnowBrainer 2006 is there anything else, and that is a quicktips word document.

I just went into the Control Panel under Add or Remove Programs and see that KnowBrainer 2006 and KnowBrainer 2008 are both there, but KnowBrainer 2010 is absent. I also just tried double clicking on the little yellow icon in the notification area of the Taskbar and lo and behold, a KB2010 Window opened and the program icon appeared in the task icons in the middle of the Taskbar. No icon appears in the notification area of the taskbar when I open KB2006 or KB2008. When I look at the small yellow icon that appears for KB2010, it appears to have Kb8 written across the top of the icon and a green arrow pointing right below that.

KB 2010 REV A is a very old version of KnowBrainer. We are now up to KB 2011 REV C and will soon be releasing REV D of KB 2011. With KB 2010 running try saying Download KnowBrainer. If you see a download that says KB 2010, take it because it is actually KB 2011 REV C in disguise. If your command doesn’t work click KB 2011 and use your current serial number to install because this is a free upgrade.
