New version is supposed to be DNS friendly. What are the advantages over the previous version PDF Converter Professional 7? ------------------------- Jomark |

Chuck sorry for the delay in replying. Thank you for your response. I thought as much and will refrain from upgrading to PDF Converter 8. Nuance is sending me numerous e-mails with special offers to upgrade. ------------------------- Jomark |

I know the professional version: Advanced PDF Converter 6.0 is a comprehensive PDF conversion tool which helps you batch convert PDF files to editable Words, or convert Word documents, PowerPoint presentations, Excel Spreadsheets to PDF files at one time.

Hope that I am not hijacking this thread, but I have a general question about PDF Professional. I am looking for a program that will allow me to edit PDF documents that I have been sent. These are almost always text only documents such as contracts that have been written in Word and then scanned into PDF to send to me and I need to edit them by deleting certain words, sections, or paragraphs, and then adding in additional language. I do not want a lot of bells and whistles but just need to be able to edit PDF text documents. I currently open them with Nuance PDF Reader and then use the free system whereby I e-mail the PDF to Nuance and they convert it to Word and return it to me to edit as needed. Problem is, the conversion is never perfect and the document I receive back that is now in Word has errors in it from the conversion and as things such as boxes or lines above a signature that cannot be moved or modified and it generally is a mess. Is there not some program I can buy to where I receive a PDF and can directly edit the text in the PDF? document?

Dennis,
There are a number of good PDF applications out there. However, the freebies won't do what you want or need to do. Unfortunately, as I've already indicated, I despise PDF Converter Professional 8. Nuance took a big step backwards with that one. However, one of its better features is the conversion from PDF to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, RTF, etc. The more recent major PDF applications, such as Adobe Acrobat Pro XI, also do an excellent job of converting PDF files and/or allowing you to edit such as long as they are text searchable. Also, you won't find what you're looking for in the freebies. Even Acrobat reader XI has some restrictions and limitations. Regardless, what you're looking for you won't get for free. Try taking a look at Nitro PDF Pro. Considerably cheaper and just as functional as Adobe Acrobat Pro IX. If you don't need a lot of bells and whistles, you might take a look at Adobe Acrobat Standard XI. I purchased PDF Converter Enterprise 7 a number of years ago, and despite the fact that it is still not exceptionally Dragon user friendly, it's a much better version for converting and/or editing PDF files. I just won't go to version 8 because there are too many bugs and conflicts. I can live with not being able to access menus by voice command, but I can't stand the error that comes up every time I open Microsoft Word with the Nuance PDF add-in, which I have to cancel out of, and there are two of them, every time I want to run Microsoft Word. The bottom line is that you can find what you want, but you have to do your homework and you will have to pay for it because, like I've already said, getting the features that you want don't come with the freebies. Thanks Chuck. I know I may have to pay for what I want and I really do not need anything that is extremely DNS friendly as I do not need this capability very often. A couple of times a week, I receive a contract or settlement agreement in PDF form that I wish to edit by deleting some words and phrases and paragraphs and inserting some of my own. I have tried Nuance PDF Professional 6 using it to convert PDF to Word and then edit the document in Word but there are so many formatting problems with the conversion such as headings that will not line up right, signature lines that cannot be edited etc., that this is not the solution. What I need, even if I have to pay for it, is a program that will allow me to edit a PDF document by deleting words I do not want and substituting and adding in words and sentences that I need to add. Do any of the programs that you discussed do that?

Dennis,
If you don't mind the idiosyncratic behavior of PDF Converter Professional 8, or better yet if you can get yourself a copy of PDF Converter Professional 7, both of these do an excellent job of converting to word without the formatting issues that you're talking about. Microsoft Word 2007 and 2010 do an excellent job of converting Word documents back to PDF. Also, PDF Converter Pro 7 and 8 have the best typewriter function for adding text anywhere in your document (PDF). Otherwise take a look at Nitro PDF Pro. The only reason that I don't like PDF Converter Professional 8 is because of the way that it interacts with Microsoft Word in terms of putting up these ridiculous warning/errors that you have to OK out of. The basic functionality of PDF Converter Professional 8 is very good in terms of what you want to do. I just have PDF Converter Professional 7 because I didn't like the idiosyncrasies in PDF Converter Professional 8. here is a second vote for Nitro PDF Pro. As with any of these PDF programs there are idiosyncrasies. I have both Adobe Pro and Nitro Pro. For what you're trying to do I think Nitro Pro has a slight edge based on my experience with converting vendor supplied PDF documents into word/text documents but I would really have to try some of my truly bizarrely formatted MS Word documents to see what gets messed up with each of the alternative tools.
