I have searched and searched because I thought there were directions somewhere in the forum for the procedure for adding an attachment/image to a posting.

But - I can't seem to find directions anywhere!

Can someone tell me how an image can be added to a post - or attached so it can be opened in a separate tab or window?

Just click the little tree icon between the chain link and Quote icons just above your posting.

1To capture screen shots I press alt or ctrl plus print screen button.

I then open Paint and paste.

I crop image as needed.

I then save file as a JPEG, then upload the file to a free file server like www.tinypic.com 696969

I use the "Direct Link for Layouts URL" and paste this into the "little tree" icon dialog box on postings at KnowBrainer forum. (The numbered boxes are links for Firefox with Mousless Browsing add-on used effortlessly with KnowBrainer.)

Sorry about all the edits.

To add an image to a post, perform the following procedure:

  1. Click on the area in your Port Reply editing window where you would like the the image to appear.
  2. Click on the icon Insert/Edit Image icon that looks like this: Insert/Edit Image Icon Example
  3. A popup window will appear that looks like the one shown below in step 4, asking you for URL of the image that you want to appear in your post. If your image is already hosted on an image server somewhere and is directly available by URL, then you can simply enter the URL to the image and click the Insert button. Otherwise, if the image is a file on your computer that needs to be uploaded to the forums, click the choose button.
  4. Insert Image Window
  5. If you are uploading your own image, when you click the Choose button, you will see a new window popup like the one shown in step 6 below. Click on the Browse button to browse/navigate to the image file on your PC, select the file, and click the Open button.
  6. Upload Image Window
  7. The path to the image on your PC will now appear in the Choose Image area of the screen shown in step 6. Press the Upload button to upload the image to the KnowBrainer forums for you to use. It will upload it into a personal directory associated with your user account on the server.
  8. Once you click the Upload button, you will see a popup that indicates if the upload was successful. You can upload standard Web image types (.gif and .jpeg files).
  9. Once your image has been uploaded, select it from the Manage Images area at the bottom of the screen shown in step 6. Use the drop down arrow to select the image that you just uploaded or, atlernatively, you can select an image that you had uploaded before. Once you have selected the image from the drop down list it will be displayed in the area above. If this is the correct image click the Use This button to select the image, otherwise choose another image fromt he drop down list (or upload another image to the server if you uploaded the wrong one).
  10. You will now be returned to the Image Properties window shown in step 4 with the URL to your image on the KnowBrainer server shown in the Image URL area. At this point you can simply click the Insert button to insert the image into your post.

In order for the procedure outlined above to work, you must be uploading a standard Web image file (GIF or JPEG) and you must have Javascript enabled on your PC (required for the KnowBrainer forums anyway). Once you've uploaded an image once or twice, the procedure becomes pretty easy. We use this two window method on the forums to provide flexibility for people to insert images that are hosted on other servers or to upload their own images to the forum server.

Please do not upload large images as it will slow down viewing of your posted message by visitors to the site. As a general rule, images should be less than 100k bytes. Images larger than this are either too big to be viewed well in the forums (e.g. large, full screen shots) or have too high a resultion (e.g. 300 dpi). If you are doing screen shots of part of your PC screen or the whole screen and then shrinking the image in an editor, then you should be fine. I recommend SnagIt for screen and print captures. It also includes image editing software for simple tasks such as image resizing, through to more complex amatuer tasks, such as adding drop shadows, edge effects, etc. Please note that KnowBrainer, Inc. and Orcutt Labs, Inc. are not associated with SnagIt in any way and receives no compensation from any advertising, promotion, or sale - it is simply a tool that I prefer for screen or print captures.
