Lunis, congratulations on the new forum, which looks wonderful. Unquestionably, the improved "search" functionality will be greatly welcomed by all users.

Recognising the significant cost outlay associated with developing the new forum such as the purchase of the new forum software, and developmental labour. Also, we overlook the cost of maintaining the forum on a daily basis, which invariably involves server/hosting costs, we remain all profoundly in your debt.

Here, here! It'll take some time to get used to, but it's unquestionably faster than the old forum. Bravo! And this probably goes without saying, but thanks for checking that the edit boxes have Full Text Control.

I wholeheartedly agree with the others and congratulations from I as well.

I notice we have to sign in with username now instead of e-mail address. That is cool also. The chat area feature looks interesting. That could be fun and I expect you could get instant answers from other members in there. I love the fact that everything is clickable now :-)

Well done!

Cheers

Ah! The tools available when writing messages seem to be much more comprehensive...That is good.

But, Marc, please could you tell us when 'Today' begins? 0000 GMT? Or EST? Or when!

Are we going to get back the option for 'Last 24 hours'? The good thing about that was that it was not dependent on time zones.

Yippee! This is fun for font junkies!

Sorry - I'm late to the party. I normally only search through the Website Comments forum. How the new forum software handles time is really interesting. It displays all time related to the time zone that you're in - not the time zone that the server is in. All of my posting times looked off, but when I went into my profile and set it to the correct time zone, everything I posted was now showing the correct time at which I posted it. This probably affects issues like the searches too.

There is definitely some things that are missing or seemingly half-finished with the forums. For example, the lack of a 'posts since last visit' and odd things like some pages having a date selector/calendar pop-up that only works in IE and other pages use a different one that works in both IE and Mozilla/FireFox. These are things that we will correct over time.

As for the cost, the cost for the forums (both to launch and to maintain day-to-day) is significant. Due to the volume of postings we wanted something that would be robust, include a bunch of admin features, update features available to users, be fully Section 508 compliant, and add key features like a blog and wikis so all KnowBrainer/DNS information could be centralized in one location (we will be populating the blog and wikis soon). Other features like the calendar and chat server (which I haven't even looked at yet) are just 'icing on the cake'. However, the license for these forums from FuseTalk was $5,000 alone, plus yearly maintenance, plus the labor to customize the forums and roll over the old users and postings.

Marc,

The mere fact that the forum has arrived quite several months after it was planned to do so is testament to the complexity. The fact that it has finally done so seamlessly, is a triumph for you: you should bask in the glory.

The fact that there are a few niggles shows we are in the real world!

Thank you so much for all you do behind the scenes. I noticed that my first post this morning showed British Summer Time, so I wondered if everyone saw their own local time - your comments suggest they do.

Next question for consideration is does the 'Today's Post' go back to one's own local midnight? I shall watch closely......!

Ed

It definitely took a while to launch the forums - longer than it should have. There was a bunch of stuff going on with my company, family, etc. so that dragged it all out some. Fortunately the forums are finally launched and, for the most part, appear to be functioning pretty well.

Is there any way of highlighting quotes as on the old forum format?

yes there is

Either use the "Quote" button to quote the entire posting first, which will put it into the edit box surrounded [ Q ] ... [ /Q ] delimiters (without the blanks), or put the snippet into such yourself.

How about putting the current time somewhere on the page, e.g. "07:44 EST", instead of making a'Last 24 hours' button as I suggested previously. I imagine that would be a good deal easier, and would help international visitors to orient themselves so far as time is concerned, without having to cudgel their brains (an activity I always find painful).

Jomark,

if you are thinking of subscribing to particular topics that you are posting in, use the "Reply" button to enter full reply mode and tick the box underneath the text box to activate "Subscribe to this topic".

Rüdiger

... just adding to it, here is what is says in the forum's help files:

Subscribing to a topic allows a member to be notified when new messages have been posted in that topic. Notifications are sent via email or through the FuseTalk private messaging system, depending on the method chosen in the user's profile.

There are two methods of subscribing to a topic. When a user is creating a message, there is a checkbox to subscribe to the topic. Before posting the new message, check the subscribe to this topic box. Alternatively, the user can click on the topic tools menu located at the top right of the thread. Select the Subscribe to this topic option, and click on the SUBSCRIBE button that appears in the new window. (If the user has a subscription already set on the topic, the label will read UNSUBSCRIBE.)

A list of the user's topic subscriptions is shown in the dashboard, enabling the user to quickly update his/her subscriptions.

Note: If a user is subscribed to an individual topic as well as the category in which the topic resides, he/she will get two notifications of new content - one for the category subscription and one for the topic subscription. Until the topic in question is viewed by the user after receiving notification of new content, further notifications will not be sent. Users will not be notified of their own contributions to a topic or category.

Is there a way to view only the new posts since the last time one visited?

Matt, not at present. We knew that this feature was missing and it would need to be added back in as it is very handy. How the forum keeps track of user sessions is very different from the old forums, where it was fairly easy to have the "posts since last visit" feature. We will add it here, it is just a matter of finalizing the functionality to work with the new forums. We have to update the KnowBrainer shopping cart for the new FedEx API before the end of the month (or else the cart won't be quoting any shipping rates) and then we'll loop back around to resolve a couple of issues like this missing search feature.

Webmaster:

If you look above the "Website Comments", at the subforums for Knowbrainer Scripts and Naturally Speaking Scripts, the blue hyperlinked title does not match the black lettering underneath.

KnowBrainer Scripts and NatuallySpeaking Scripts are switched.
