Everyone, please be advised that the KnowBrainer website will be offline for several hours this weekend (Saturday the 26th and Sunday the 27th) - the exact time hasn't been set yet. The reason for the shutdown is an upgrade to the ColdFusion application server software. This is a stepping stone so that we can later, in a few weeks, release new forum software for all of you. The bad news is that this will change the user interface and functionality of the forums. The good news is that this will change the user interface and functionality of the forums. It just depends on how you look at it...

The new forums, powered by software from FuseTalk are meant to eliminate several problems we currently face, as well as add new functionality. First and foremost, we're adding basic functionality that has been oddly missing for some time, such as the ability to preview your posting before it is actually posted, improving the RSS and Section 508 compliance, etc. Also, the FuseTalk forums will add powerful documentation and email functionality. New email services will add features such as the ability to respond to a post via email, with your e-mailed reponse posted into the forums. The new documentation feature allows the integration of blogs and wikis. This allows forum administrators to post new (or move existing) information into areas other than forum postings, provide better information and documentation support for everything from notices about what is going on the speech recognition world, to online documentation and knowledge base of KnowBrainer products.

These new forums will take several weeks to launch as we migrate all of the existing user accounts and postings from these forums to the new forums and as we allocate time for testing. A cursory review shows that we shouldn't be losing any functionality from the migration to the new forums and, instead, should be solving some long term problems that have plagued these forums (including slow responsiveness and complete server crashes).

More to come...

Wow, copying everyone's postings, login information etc. sounds like a lot of work. I'd like to know who's footing the bill for this marvelous extravaganza!

Bad news: it will be very expensive. Good news: it won't be outrageously expensive. However, bad news again: these terms are very subjective...

I know users are experiencing intermittent outages of the KnowBrainer site and forums. These are brief and are a result of us making changes to the server to keep it operational and improve performance a little while we work on deploying the new forums. This is a large project and is expected to take a couple of weeks.

Just a quick update - we now should be less than two weeks away from moving over the the new forums. We have our conversion code in place that is moving over everyone's user accounts (so there will be no need to re-register), topics, threads, etc. We are now patching some functionality that was missing/changed in the new forums. For example, the ability to upload your own photos was missing (the new forums required you to post your images elsewhere on the web, e.g. PhotoBucket, and reference them from there), so we are correcting that functionality.

I feel that there is room here for a tribute to the Brothers Orcutt.

They can't spell, of course (I gather that really truly they are Scottish Urquharts...), but they have certainly made my life a happier, friendlier and more interesting place than ever it deserved to be.

So let's hear it for them!

Ed

(And just in case the Orcutts take offence - which I doubt, because they seem to be endowed with a decent sense of humour - remember what Ogden Nash had to say about the Steins:-

"I don't like the family Stein. There's Gert and there's Ep and there's Ein.

Gert's writing is bunk; Ep's sculpture is junk - and nobody understands Ein."

Wouldn't anyone agree that having pictures on this forum, more than once, is coming close to wasting web space? (Not to mention other more useful resources, such as money.)

Well, it's past the point where we can make any changes in the code, but we can still make changes to the Easter Egg!

Yes, for these forums, attachments are probably of more value than photos. Come to think of it, I need to make sure we can upload attachments too...
