After several years of non use of Dragon N.S. and several computer changes, I re-located my Dragon N.S. disc and the entry code. Once I got back in I am asked for an Activation Key but my key(s) are not compatable with the entry boxes on screen. I am in, but it tells me I am allowed to use my system 5 times. Then what?

Welcome to the World’s Most Popular Speech Recognition Forum
You'll find your activation key (serial number) on the back of your Ver. 8 installation disk sleeve. You should also see 3 copies of the serial number on the back of your disk. 2 of the copies can be peeled off. If the serial number doesn't match the pop-up box then it sounds like the original sleeve has been misplaced. Unfortunately you didn't tell us which flavor of NaturallySpeaking you are using (Essentials, Standard, Preferred, Pro etc.) but the serial number should look something like the following: A109A-X00-????-????-?? Note that if you purchased your NaturallySpeaking software from us, we probably have your serial number on file and you can contact us for it. This is 1 of the perks we offer our customers. If you cannot locate your original serial number, you will only be able to use NaturallySpeaking 5 times before it will fail to launch and considering that it is Ver. 8, even if you registered your original copy, Nuance (407) 241-1822 may not have your serial number available and to further rub salt into the wound, they will charge you $20 just to look. -------------------------

Hi Lunis, Thanks for your help. I do have the serial number and it got me back in no problem. But it then asked for an acivation key which, it said, would be needed to prevent the system crashing after 5 uses. I originally wrote (on a scrap of paper) the following: Serial No. A209X UUW xxxx xxxx xx Fingerprint 3342 525B A209 8.0 Activation key AE3E 3ECA 3EIC 3C45 8883 3252B 8F36 2A81 0AC4 A4D7 IOC4 CF12 3IAZ 14B7 B07I I am sorry but i have no idea now whether a 1 is a i or a 0 is an o, or indeed, where or what these figures go or are meaning? Does this help at all? Thanks,

We see what you are referring to now. Manual Activation is required when NaturallySpeaking thinks that you made a change to your computer, such as replacing the hard drive and it's a bit of a pain in the butt. You can find a step-by-step on “Manual Activation” in the NaturallySpeaking Quick Tips (at the top of this page) but it might be easier if you just uninstall NaturallySpeaking, run DNS8.1 Remover, reinstall DNS 8 and just go for the default automatic activation which should work without prompting you for the miserable manual version. It's nice to have options…

Well done. I feel I am now back in and OK after the uninstall process. Now to see if it all still works. Many, many thanks for your help. Smiler ------------------------- Smiler is a Dragon Naturally Speaking 8 re-user |

I spoke too soon. After uninstaling the programme, both automatic activation and manual activation do not work. Message says SERIAL NUMBER INVALID. The serial number seems to be correct because it gets me/got me into the programme in the first place but then the need for this activation key (15 sets of numbers and letters) is confusing. I am treating all 0s as number 0, having seen this in the 'tips' section, but it was only referring to the serial key, not the activatioin keu/ What can I try next please? I am now down to 4 uses. Buy a license for 11.5. Works like a charm compared to earlier versions. Why spend so much time and energy on an old version? ------------------------- DNS 12 Pro, Medical, Premium - German, English, French - Dragon Dictate 3.0, dns.comfort

Smiler, Lunis has a good point. There have been times when I found that entering the serial number I made a mistake by transposing or incorrectly typing the last 10 alphanumeric characters of the serial number. It's very easy to do and very hard to spot because you generally tend to think they're correct when, in fact, there may be a subtle error that you don't pick up because you simply happen to be "snow blind". Just make sure that you check the last 10 alphanumeric characters entered character by character. As long as you have a valid serial number on the labels on the CD sheath I would be willing to bet that you probably entered at least one character incorrectly. Even the best of us run into this problem sometimes. "If anything can possibly go wrong, it generally will and at the worst possible moment." (Murphy's law - Edward A. Murphy, Jr.) Another variant of this is, "If there is a 1 in 10 million chance that something that you do will fail or go wrong, just remember that you are #1." -------------------------

A not well publicized quirk with NaturallySpeaking is how the serial number works. You only have to correctly type the 1st 8 digits, which are universally the same for each flavor of NaturallySpeaking (not to mention viewable from the outside of the box), in order to install NaturallySpeaking. Interestingly enough, you can make up anything you want for the last 10 digits including all zeros and it will install just fine. However, you won't be able to activate unless the serial number is correct and if you cannot activate, you will probably have to purchase a new copy of NaturallySpeaking because you cannot upgrade from Ver. 8.
