Topic Title: DNS 11.5 won't work consistently on the Internet Topic Summary: On the Internet, often I dictate a line and it is mistaken for a command. A window opens up and I can't dictate where I want to. Created On: 12/22/2011 02:45 PM Status: Post and Reply |

Dear Know Brainer, I am having a lot of problems with Dragon NaturallySpeaking version 11.5. It's OK most of the time if I work in the DragonPad or in Outlook Express. In Word documents, it's good about 80% of the time, but occasionally I have received an error message saying that Dragon needs to shut down and Word is going to disable it. But my worst problem is on the Internet! If I'm on a search engine, Facebook or my Yahoo e-mail account, I frequently am redirected to another window or game application. It seems Dragon doesn't understand me when I'm on the Net and it thinks that I am saying a command like open another window when I'm really saying something like hi Kathy. Has anyone seen this problem before? Any ideas about what to do? I have uninstalled both Word 2010 and DNS and reinstalled them both, to no avail. I have also done system restores and they don't help either. Here are the specifics for my system – using Dragon naturally speaking version 11.5; on Windows 7, using a desktop application with an HP Pavilion slimline 5310 PC (640 GB hard drive, 4G8 DDR3 system memory, 64-bit). Thanks! Sigrid ------------------------- Sigrid A. Macdonald |

Yahoo isn't exactly NaturallySpeaking friendly but a good deal of Facebook is. Did you, perchance, remove the checkmark from Require “Click” to select hyperlinks in HTML Windows under the DNS Options/Commands tab? Not having that checkmark on cause all kinds of grief when using Internet Explorer.

Hi Lunis, Thanks for the reply. No, I never touched that option. I wouldn't have removed it and I also restored all my default options recently and reinstalled the program. That box is clicked. And I am typing right now here just fine in this window. The problem is sporadic and not related to Yahoo. I am usually on Facebook; nine times out of 10 it works fine and the 10th time, some weird windows pop up and I can't get rid of them and I'm lost. Usually the window that pops up is Outlook Express but there are other ones too. I think the program just doesn't understand me that well and thinks I am giving it a command. I read somewhere that I can go into the options section and click something special for DNS to know that I am about to give a command because it usually screws up on postal codes and some capitals too. But I couldn't find that in the tools and options section. Do you know where that is or do you think that would resolve this issue? Thanks. Sigrid

For example, I was just on Facebook now and I clicked in a comment box and I dictated the words, "I bet they're beautiful, Frank." And immediately my control panel opened. I couldn't post to FB at all. Also, in the line above as soon as I said the word "post," a little box appeared saying that I could post something to Facebook right here in this window and then I couldn't dictate anymore. I had to write the line above manually. So it is clear to me that DNS thinks I'm giving a command of some sort when I'm not. It thinks I wanted to open the control panel or to post to Facebook from this forum. How can I rectify that? Sigrid ------------------------- Sigrid A. Macdonald |

We probably should've asked this question earlier but are using Internet Explorer or a non-Full Text Control browser such as Firefox? If the answer is Firefox, that would explain the problem.

Lunis, I'm using Explorer - latest version, which I believe is 9.

Internet Explorer 9 is the right answer but we now wonder if you are being victimized by Samurai Command Mode. If you haven't already done so, we recommend unchecking the DNS search commands. You'll find a step-by-step on the process when you look up “samurai” in the NaturallySpeaking Quick Tips (at the top of this page)

Hi Lunis, thanks so much for all that info about the samurai. I never would've thought of that. I reconfigured my tools and options section, and I will see how that goes. I also read the part in the FAQ right below that because often Dragon will dictate the words "him, him, him" and I could never figure out what that was about. Now I realize that my Brother laser printer is pretty noisy. I think I'm going to turn it off most of the time unless I'm printing because it may be interfering with word recognition and commands also. And I have an AMD processor. Ever since I got this computer Dragon has never worked as well as it used to. When I do an upgrade, I will definitely go with Intel. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I think this will work. Will let you know. Merry Christmas! Sigrid ------------------------- Sigrid A. Macdonald |

I find that "him him him" is from breathing into the microphone. Try moving the microphone more laterally and especially back away from in front of your mouth.

Thanks, Gerry. I'll remember that. Meanwhile, I spoke too soon! My original problem has returned. It seems most prominent on Facebook. I will try to locate another error message and post it. Frustrating! Sigrid

Hi Lunis, I noticed two problems. One is that when I say the word hi Dragon thinks that I'm saying click. I can see it in the words that appear above my dictation. I don't know the formal word for that but you would. Second, when I'm on Facebook dictating into a window, Dragon thinks that I want to post to Twitter. It's probably because I am saying hi to someone but even when I don't use that word hi, immediately the Twitter box pops up when I talk into a comment window. Any idea how to correct this? It is still misunderstanding my words as commands. Thanks. Sigrid

The new Facebook and Twitter commands can be a real nuisance and Nuance (we know what you're thinking) should get in the habit of beta testing new features before springing them on the public or minimally allow the end-user to turn them off. Fortunately, a programming genius and forum contributor by the name of Lindsay Adam, of www.pcvoice.com from England (by way of Scotland) found a way to circumvent the new social media commands. You'll find a step-by-step process when you look up “Facebook” or “Twitter” in the NaturallySpeaking Quick Tips (at the top of this page).

c:\ProgramData\Nuance\NaturallySpeaking11\Data\enx\dat Oh, Lunis! I'm sorry I didn't check the FAQ first! I'm not trying to be lazy. It just doesn't occur to me, but I will make a huge mental note to do that next time before I bother you. I found that file and renamed it. I assume that will take care of the problem. The other commands are working well now that I disabled the other features you suggested earlier. Thanks again (and gratitude to Lindsay). I think this is good. Happy 2012. Sigrid
