I just purchased the DSN 11.5 version a few weeks ago. I haven't got a whole lot done in respect to learning the software. In fact I am very confused about the whole thing. But I will continue trying to learn and trying to keep my questions on this forum to a minimum. One of the first few questions that I ask on this form a few weeks ago, was about the microphone headset that came with the 11.5 version. I believe that it was lLUNIS, and another member that informed me that I would need a sound card and an upgraded headset and  and mic to be more efficient than with the headset that came with the package as well as a sound card.  Since my funds are pretty limited due to living on a disability fixed income check. Aaased on researching online about some speach recognition programs I did purchase another headset with mic and a sound card for little less than $75. I would just like to get an opinion from experienced users about my purchase and how they think that it will work with the program. I actually just got it today and have not even had time to try it out. The headset that I purchased is called a the   " I VXI talkpro SCI headset. Although most of you are aware of this product I was just describe a few of the functions it has. Although not nearly is good quality as the ones for sale listed home no-brainers it does say that this is a good speech recognition product it says that it has the latest VXI noise canceling microphone technology for accurate audio performance. Wideband audio for more natural productivity boosting sound quality and echo cancellation insuring more precise and clearest audio for speak recognition and IP communications. It also says wideband audio, although I don't know what that is. Now the model of the sound card that I bought is  " TURTLE BEACH TBS – 1155 AUDIO ADVANTAGE AMIGO 11 USB ". The literature that I read regarding the sound card is basically what I've read on all of them that I looked at and that is that it just overrides the soundcard on the computer and acts as a separate sound card that is on the computer board. I'm sure that you all  know what I'm talking about, and I would just like to get a few opinions if you guys think this would be a fairly decent combination to work for a beginner as it is just really basically for personal use for sending e-mails, creating letters in Microsoft Word, and browsing the web. That is all that I have actually done since I've had it a few weeks ago and I can tell that I'm going to really like it once I start learning all the other things that can be done with this program.
In any regards, I would like to say thanks in advance to any members who would like to give an opinion if they think this combination that I bought will work pretty well. Thanks for taking the time out to read this and I look forward for any responses.  NOTE:  in an unrelated topic I would like to comment on A question that I asked a few weeks ago when I first got my 11.5, on this forum I asked if anyone knew if Microsoft works word processor would work with the 11.5 and I was told that someone thought that it would. Well after trying some of the commands as you would do for Word, it does not. Now I can manually open up the Microsoft Works processor and place the cursor in a text document and dictate and it does subscribe the dictation, although it does not obey any commands. So I have a friend of mine that has an extra copy of the Microsoft Ward 2007 who is going to let me download one of his product keys for Word and then I can start trying to learn the word commands. Again I one like to thank all of you who read this and your opinions.

Sincerely

RICK

Rick,

The VXi TalkPro SC1 is a good modern headset that performs very well with NaturallySpeaking.

I am not familiar with the Turtle Beach 1155 USB so can't comment from experience.  The basic design of a USB sound device is essentially the same from any manufacturer however some designs pay particular attention to a low noise floor and others to added features.  The 1155, for example appears to have a built in amplifier for sound output.  Being of a suspicious nature I always wonder about equipment that is much cheaper than the average (the Amigo is around $23 while the "favourite" USBs for speech recognition are ~$50) however the proof is really how well the unit performs.  I can find one customer review in the UK which reports that the USB works well with Dragon.

At less than $75 for the two you have a good deal although your supplier may be breaking the Minimum Advertised Price agreement with the manufacturers!

Graham

Rick,

I took a look at the Turtle Beach TBS USB SoundPod. I see no reason why it shouldn't work well with the VXI microphone and DNS. That being said, there is more mileage in terms of testing and use relative to the Andrea PureAudio USB-SA, Buddy USB 6G, and the Andrea half duplex USB SoundPods, and these are specifically designed for speech recognition because the manufacturers who produce them are also in the speech recognition microphone business as well. They are familiar with Dragon NaturallySpeaking. It might cost you a little more, but from a personal standpoint I wouldn't choose the Turtle Beach unit over the, for example, Andrea PureAudio USB-SA or Buddy USB 6G.

Regardless, I'm sure that you would have no problems with the Turtle Beach USB SoundPod. It's just that no one is ever tested this USB pod with Dragon. At least, no one is ever reported such. Nevertheless, the bottom line is that when you're choosing USB SoundPods, you will always be better off going with knowns vs. the unknowns.

We agree with Graham in that the TalkPro SC1 is an excellent choice for a microphone as it incorporates the latest VXI has to offer. It is definitely a solid performer and you got an excellent deal. Unfortunately, it seems like there is always an Amazon vendor that doesn't realize he's paying 8 points on the dollar and thinks he's actually making a profit by selling something for $3 over his own cost. However, we certainly can't blame you for shopping around.
