I'm working with a group of docs, helping them begin to use their 8-year-old EMR effectively.   They will probably have DNS Preferred v10, probably supported by the KB command set and vocabs, dictating into an RTF window in the EMR.

I'd like be able to design macros to do things like the following:

  • If the entry in 'Bookmark 1' is '5', elsewhere in the macro the logic creates, "Such-and-such is 5, and you probably should eat more cabbage."  If it's "13", then the output would be, "Such-and-such is 13, which is pretty great.  Keep up the good work."
  • For very young kids, they use Height/Weight calculations.  After a particular age, they switch to BMI (a different calculation of height vs. weight).  Can we design a macro based on Bookmark 1 (age), Bookmark 2 (Ht), & Bookmark 3 (Wt) so that, if the kid is under 2, it creates "The Ht/Wt ratio is X."  but, if the age is over 2, it calculates the BMI and says, "The BMI is Y."

What parts of the above, if any, are possible?  Or do they need to do this in templates in Word or Excel, and then copy?

Thanks in advance.

I may be wrong - but I do not believe that Preferred V. 10 will permit dictation into any EMR any more.  I believe that Medical V. 10 is the only edition of DNS now that will permit dictation into an EMR, unless Lunis has some magic wand that will change that?

I'm sure Lunis will come along and confirm or refute this.

Until then.............

KnowBrainer isn't capable of this type of Visual Basic if argument although it is possible in DNS Pro, Medical and Legal. Depending on your EMR software, as Dana pointed out, you may not even be able to use DNS Preferred 10. Many EMR programs, like eClinicalWorks, are easy to construct workarounds for by changing the name of the executable but this isn't always the case.
