Dear medical community I am a speech recognition vendor Switzerland. So far I've been dealing mostly with German-speaking clients. Now I am dealing with a medical company where English is also widely spoken. Due to the lack of experience of speech recognition vendors in Switzerland with English-speaking clients I find myself in the position of having to seek help here: what are your experiences with the American or British Dragon Medical editions? Are the built-in vocabularies actually accurate? Do you have to do a lot of training or is the accuracy with the medical editions acceptable from the get go? Note that the Dragon Medical editions for German are pretty much unusable for the common physician without extensive customization. Or do you go the same route as in Europe and buy the vocabularies from specialists in vocabulary building? (Lunis, I have seen that you offer a KnowBrainer medical version. Why did you create it and how does it compare to the medical versions of Dragon?) I appreciate your feedback! I'm trying to avoid the situation where I sell them a product that I know nothing about and that may be oversold by Nuance. Thanks and regards, Boris

The KnowBrainer Medical vocabularies are US spellings which means they are not ideally suited outside the US and Canada. As far as the accuracy of the US medical vocabularies are concerned, they are impressive. As long as you're doing the doctor talk, as opposed to standard dictation, we have found that both our Medical language models and the Nuance language models are highly accurate. Unfortunately, most of the development funding is thrown into the US medical market because that's where the lions share of the profit is. We're not surprised to hear that the German Medical language models might be somewhat less than optimal.
Our 1st recommendation would be to contact Nuance UK and consider using the UK Medical language models because you need the World English vocabulary spellings. Unfortunately we cannot comment as to the accuracy of the UK language models because we are not that familiar with it. However, they are probably the only game in town if you're working with Medical English in any country outside the US/Canada. -------------------------

Lunis, A belated thank you for your insight. I do not suppose that British or American spelling are the main issue. It is rather more important to find a version of Dragon Medical that will be suited to the accent of the speaker. Unfortunately, I have learned that the UK version of Dragon Medical only includes the British spelling and accent. The US version of Dragon Medical is on the table again. Would it be possible to install it alongside the German medical version of Dragon? Note that the German medical version uses the 11.0 speech engine. My gut feeling tells me that it won't be possible, but could you please confirm it?
