I have been waiting for the new Dragon 11 Medical to come out. I figured I waited this long, I might as well wait for the program that works with my EMR. My group uses Mckesson Practice Partner run remotely through Citrix. I was discussing with the IT guy yesterday about the eventual release of Dragon 11 Medical. I discussed how others are using Dragon 11 Professional with a medical vocabulary to take advantage of better speech recognition. I did not want to do this because we work with the EMR and I do not want to have any problems. He states that it should not matter with our set up with Citrix. Dragon will not be able to tell what program you are in. I am not positive he is correct about this, thus I am posting this for help. I do not have any access to the supposed Dragon features of Practice Partner. Maybe this is the same thing that happens with using non-medical version of Dragon. Obviously if I can use Professional with medical vocab, it would save me some money. I am hoping someone has experience with this and can guide me. Thank you in advance.

Aside from the optional Hidden Dictation Box feature and a small display option in the Medical 10 Command Browser, there is really no difference between DNS Pro and DNS Medical from a functionality point of view. However, we suspect that your IT guy isn't aware of how Nuance development disables nonmedical versions of DNS. Although it's true that NaturallySpeaking cannot detect what application you are dictating into, over a network, it additionally reads the Window name. For example: Try creating a Microsoft Word document and naming it eClinicalWorks, S.O.A.P. Notes or McKesson Practice Partner. When you reopen the document, NaturallySpeaking will turn the microphone off in any Ver. 10 or Ver. 11 profile other than Medical. We're not saying that this won't work but rather be warned that Nuance uses more than 1 approach to prevent unauthorized dictation.
Having made the previous disclaimer… Dictation is possible with DNS Pro or even DNS Premium in any EMR application with KnowBrainer Medical. However, even KnowBrainer Medical doesn't allow direct dictation into a blacklisted EMR. In KnowBrainer Medical, you do all of your dictation in the KB Editor (similar to DragonPad) and say Transfer to cut all of your dictation to the clipboard, switch to your EMR application, paste the contents of the clipboard into the EMR application, tab to the next field, switch back to the KB Editor and turn the microphone back on. Obviously you could do all this without KnowBrainer Medical by dictating into DragonPad, selecting everything, cutting everything to the clipboard, switching to the EMR application, pasting the contents into the EMR application, tabbing to the next field, switching back to DragonPad and turning the microphone back but KnowBrainer Medical combines the 7 previous steps into a single command, includes the KnowBrainer command technology and 51 specialty vocabularies. -------------------------
