I apologize. I shouldn't have imposed on you. What I meant to say was that you do things like this on a regular basis. I don't. I didn't mean to say that you could or would.

Actually, what I meant to say was that if anyone is likely to have a handle on how to do something like this, you would be the one to have the most knowledge about whether it can be done or not. It's just not something that I'm interested or need to research. Otherwise, I would look into it.

Thanks Chuck. You are absolutely right, there's no way to know how it happened. They were in there yesterday when I used DNS for work, but today they weren't. I always do the save after I make a bunch of changes because sometimes it does crash or the power goes out, whatever reason, so I do save immediately after. I know they were there yesterday, so something happened between yesterday and today. Oh well. I guess it will have to remain a mystery! Thanks for the reply!

There are a number of things that can cause this:

1. Having made the changes to the entries in the Vocabulary Editor, including the properties section, and DNS not saving your user profile afterwards. When this happens, whatever changes you made to the Vocabulary Editor are gone with no possibility of recovery. Your only option is to reenter them.

2. You restored a backup copy that didn't include these changes.

3. There are occasions in which DNS does not allow the changes, or prevents the changes from being added because you may have your user profile open and being currently actively accessed by another application, particularly Windows Explorer. In that case, Windows will not allow any writes to any entry in your users folder.

I can't think of anything else that might cause this because if you save your user profiles after making such changes, they should take. However, I always check to make sure anytime I add anything new to the Vocabulary Editor.

Regardless, somewhere along the line they obviously got lost and my guess is that most likely it was after you made a particular change and your user profile was not saved properly or not saved at all. That is the most common cause. Nevertheless, you can scratch your head over it and swear up and down that that didn't happen. However, that doesn't mean it didn't. It just means it wasn't obvious.

To ensure that these types of changes don't get lost in the shuffle, after you make significant changes to the Vocabulary Editor such as these, make sure that you save your user profile immediately. Don't wait for Dragon to do it because anything can happen in the interim, such as Dragon spontaneously shutting down or crashing, in which case your entries are lost because your user profile is saved. The vocabulary is particularly sensitive to these types of issues and you are notified when something like this happens. So, bottom line is just be careful and make sure that they are saved by checking it after you have saved your user profile, or DNS has saved it if you set it to "Automatically save user profile". I personally don't like the automatically save option because there are times when it doesn't execute properly, or doesn't execute at all when closing your user profile. I prefer to leave this option unselected so that every time I save my user profile I'm prompted and I know that the operation completed properly because I have to say yes.

Unfortunately, aside from what I've stated above, there is no way to absolutely determine what happened. The only thing you can be confident in is that it did in fact happen and you lost your changes.

Some of the commands work, but important ones like "undo" "center" that etc. still do not. Again, they all work better with Natural Language Commands disabled.

I have not been able to get KnowBrainer to work but will try again when I receive KB2010 and DNS which I hope Lunis shipped yesterday!

I had already figured out the method using a list but it is not suitable for my needs.

Yes, to a certain extent. The way VoicePower works it isn't always necessary to create such commands because some of what you're asking for is already built-in in terms of opening and positioning windows. For example, using the "display open Windows" command you can pick to applications, open them side-by-side perfectly aligned, and decide which one you want on the left in which one you want on the right. As I've already indicated in this case, you simply select the number for each of these applications and just say the numbers (i.e., 1 2, 9 4, 6 1) whatever applications you have selected by number are then displayed left for the first number that you say and write for the second number that you say. This is all one command. In addition, the way that VoicePower works, and relative to the bookmark feature, you can always open a bookmarked file, folder, webpage, etc. in multiple sequences by just saying the bookmark name (i.e., display right | left | upper left | upper right | lower left | lower right | center | top | bottom) this let you create any number of application or file bookmarks that you can call directly using this command and put them anywhere on your screen and you can dictate them in sequence. You can pause at any point, you can change directions and point, yada yada yada.

What I would need to know is exactly what you're trying to do in a step-by-step format. Then I can answer that question specifically. For the professional version users, we also have an XML scripting language which allows you to create your own. Regardless, I need a step-by-step explanation of what you're talking about specifically in order to give you a definitive answer. Even so, our intention is not to concentrate on scripting and giving the user the option to use any form of scripting they wish if they need to do something that other third-party scripting languages do perhaps a little better or differently. The purpose of VoicePower is primarily to stick to ease of use and functional commands that users are most likely to use consistently. VoicePower is not intended to be scripting language per se, even though we can do certain things using Wizard driven custom command, or, more appropriate to VoicePower, VoiceShortcuts. What VoicePower can do is pretty extensive, but it's not without its limits just as there are limits in KnowBrainer and Advanced Scripting, and even in Vocola.

No, there is no built-in right and left scrolling in DNS, even in version 11. That is, not the way scrolling up and down is controlled.

You can use KnowBrainer's approach, but this is not "smooth" scrolling as with the up-and-down scrolling.

On the other hand, it might be possible to create an advanced script to do this. However, I would suspect that it would be a monster considering how difficult it would be to implement the "stop scrolling" check. KnowBrainer's approach is the simplest and easiest to implement. Smooth scrolling is a whole other can of worms and I just don't want to go there because I can foresee too much time and effort being required to make it work properly.

Lindsay has more time to do something like this than I do. I personally don't consider worth doing.

What I like about this feature is that at least Nuance had the presence of mind to give users the option to use either.

However, I've not found that using the default option is any less indicative of whether or not DNS is working. I like the default option because I don't like being distracted by the results box showing my dictation. I only wanted to show me the little green flame with the rotating cursor, or whether or not a command has been recognized and recognized correctly. I can always tell using this option whether or not DNS is actually working. I don't find it any less informative and I definitely like not being distracted by the results box because my results show up so fast in the document in which I am dictating that I'm more interested in what that displays that I am and what the results box displays, or in watching it jump through its hoops during the recognition process.

On the other hand, one of the things that development told me was that the reason for this is based on recommendations from their trainers (those folks with whom I used to work in going around to users sites and training corporate people, as well as doing the user group demonstrations). Part of the discussion that occurred during the development phase was that the point in making this change was to focus users on dictation rather than on watching the results. Based on training current users of DNS 11, I find this to be true. That is the less that new users concentrate on the results box vs. concentrating on what they're saying and learning to dictate in longer phrases vs. short choppy phrases is more effective for new users.

On the other hand, us old codgers sometimes find it more refreshing and comfortable sticking with the status quo.

Either way, it gives users the option and that's what's important.

I want to say "scroll right" and have the contents of the window scroll until I say "stop scrolling".

I am willing to settle for something a hack. I need it for a specific application so I can control the exact size of the window and therefore know in advance the placement of the right and left scroll gadgets. On this application, the gadgets always exist visually but are not enabled when not needed so clicking on them does nothing.

Is there a way using Advanced Scripting to create some kind of a "do/while" loop that just keeps clicking the mouse button (after it has been suitably moved to the proper position) until a new utterances recognized? In pseudocode:

Move Cursor to window specific location (where we know the appropriate gadget resides)

ButtonClick

While ("stop scrolling" has not been heard)

that's just what I like about it and this is why I have reverted to previous mode. It is not that I watch the contents of the results box while dictating, and therefore it doesn't distract me, however seeing it working in the background makes me feel more comfortable.

A long time ago, Joel Gould, the principal programmer who laid the foundation to the program, said that adding the results box as a feature can make the program seem more responsive. I fully agree with that, because without it, I feel like driving blind.

Just keep in mind that while you can get DNS 11 to upgrade your 10.1 user profile, it is recommended that you use that as your working profile for the reasons that have been discussed many times in the past:

1. An upgraded user profile will not perform as well as a new user profile created in a new version.

2. There are issues inherent in any user profile that are not handle via the upgrade process. Therefore, you will inherit any user profile issues that occurred using your 10.1 user profile. The only thing the upgrade process does is ensure compatibility, it doesn't fix problems that may be inherent in your DNS 10.1 user profile. Therefore, it's always a good idea to start fresh and move all your custom words and custom commands to the new user profile. A new user profile and DNS 11 will take full advantage from the get go of all the new features in DNS 11. A converted DNS 10.1 user profile will take longer to get up to speed, reemphasizing again that you will inherit any profile issues with your DNS 10.1 user profile [i.e., (v11) are your converted previous version user profiles format).

3. You can always copy your mycmds.dat from your DNS 10.1 converted user profile to your DNS 11 user profile and preserve any custom commands without having to worry about exporting and importing using the Pro version.

Although commands like bold that, undo that and italicize that worked very well in previous versions of DNS, we noticed that beginning in Ver. 10, they were not quite as is well recognized. You might try using some of the newer NaturallySpeaking commands that were introduced in Ver. 10.

Example: If you want to bold the 5th word in the following phrase “How come the word KnowBrainer isn't in my vocabulary” just say bold KnowBrainer and watch the magic happen. You can do the same thing with italicize , underline , delete and others.

Thank you for your response. Making DNS 11 show the preliminary results gives me comfort that the program is still working. Sometimes it is hard for me to tell whether the program has been frozen or not.

I didn't say that "Please say that again" wasn't the equivalent of . Obviously it is, but I think we're splitting hairs here. When I talked with my development colleagues, they said "That phrase means that Dragon didn't understand…" Basically, I was going with what they said. However, looking at it again I don't think it makes any difference whether you say that he didn't understand what you said or didn't recognize what you said, it means the same thing. So, jump on development because it's their term, not mine. All your testing program indicates is that the recognizer was engaged, it doesn't tell you anything about the underlying process. Regardless, I agree that it's not worth quibbling about because it's the function not the semantics that count, and I don't disagree with what you're saying basically. Neither of us are wrong, we just approached it from two different perspectives both of which arrive at the same endpoint.

Issues with DNS 11 - GDS

There's a fourth thing, but I believe it indicates problems with my system more than it does problems with Dragon. Consider the microphone in the system tray. If it is green and upright, it indicates that the microphone is listening. When you begin an utterance, a little red mark (not unlike the ones in DNS 9 and 10) appears above the microphone before the green flame (i.e., new results box) appears.

When Dragon is working properly, the time from the appearance of the red mark ("an utterance was heard" to the appearance of the green flame ("your utterance is being processed" is unnoticeable. However, there are times when the red mark will appear above the microphone and the green flame will not. Under these conditions, Dragon is lagging. That is, not only will my commands not be processed, but none of the hotkeys (i.e., numpad+ for microphone off) will work.

Once the green flame does appear, any utterances I made will be "stacked." In other words, they will fire in rapid succession. So, too, will any key presses I send to the program.

Under these conditions, every other process and application on my system appears to be working. That is, when Dragon is lagging I can still tab to an open Internet Explorer window and navigate IE 8. None of my other programs will quit running. But frankly, I'm not sure why this is happening. With a Core 2 Duo Processor, 4 GB of RAM, and a suitable microphone and sound card, I was able to run DNS 10.1 without these hiccups. Also, I'm experiencing these with a new (under 2 weeks old, accuracy tuning ran only once) profile using BestMatch III.

Is this hiccup something that you (or someone in the know) could understand from my Dragon log?
