How often are you presented with the dilemma of wondering where an important file or message is and to make matters worse, you can't even remember the name of the file; let alone where you saved it. Losing track of information can be a major headache but fortunately, Windows 7 includes an impressive search utility that allows us to search for and preview nearly any file or e-mail on our entire computer in a manner of seconds. For some, this may even be reason enough to upgrade to Windows 7. You don't have to remember the name of the file or email. You just have to remember some unique information within the file or message. Although the Windows 7 search feature is pretty slick on its own, we thought we might be able to spruce it up with a verbal command or 2...
If you're using Windows 7, KnowBrainer or DNS Pro Medical or Legal, you can instantly find virtually any phrase within a file, folder or e-mail by saying “Search Computer”. The “Search Computer” command will launch Windows 7’s search utility and verbally prompt you to dictate what you would like Windows to search for. Note that you have up to 4 seconds to begin dictating what you are searching for. When you finish dictating, the command will automatically click See more results (no kidding) which will open Windows Explorer and if you have your preview pane turned on, you'll be able to see inside most Microsoft Office files and Outlook e-mails without having to open them. Another variation of this command is “Search Everywhere” which copies the last dictated phrase or any highlighted phrase and searches your entire computer for files and messages that contain the information in the search criteria. If you would like to add these commands to your existing KnowBrainer or NaturallySpeaking Pro, Medical or Legal command arsenal feel free to copy the appropriate scripts (depending on whether you are adding this command to NaturallySpeaking or KnowBrainer).
Addendum: If you're using a Windows 7 preview mode and you would like to see the 1st item in the search list appear in the preview pane, try the following scripts which you can simply cut and paste into KnowBrainer or DNS Pro Command Browsers:
