Hi:

I am an academic, so most of my computer work is writing, either text or answering student e-mails.

I have been using Dragon naturally speaking for several years now, and I must confess that I like it a lot, even though my colleagues sometimes look at me strangely due to my speaking into my headset...

My machine is an HP laptop,2 MB of RAM., using Vista as an operating system. Programs most used are outlook 2007 and Word 2007, and my browser is Firefox.

I use Dragon version 9 preferred for Vista. I am wondering whether I need KnowBrainer to help my computing performance. To be honest, I am not that interested in the command functions.

my major peeve with Dragon is the inability to work well in Firefox, and in Word, the fact that my apostrophes and quotation marks remain "straight" and not "curly" despite making the property changes suggested in the forum. This is a major issue for me, given the nature of my writing.

I am interested in the experiences of users to see if
KnowBrainer 2006 Command Set - Upgrade Version (Download)

addresses these issues, and if it does if I can use the upgrade version or if I need to purchase the full version.

many thanks in advance, Richard

All versions of KnowBrainer are full copies but you have to have owned a previous copy of KnowBrainer in order to use an upgrade.  In other words you need your previous serial number.  This is pretty much how all software manufacturers work and you have to admit it's only fair.

KnowBrainer does not include quotes “curly quotes”.  These are included in UniVoice but you do not need to purchase UniVoice to add smart quotes to your user profile.  You simply have to follow our “smart quotes” instructions in our Quick Tips in order to add them to your current user profile. No purchase necessary ;-).  You mentioned that you have attempted to follow these instructions before but you simply didn't do it right.  The concept of adding ASCII characters is a bit strange because you have to hold the {Alt} Key down while pressing the appropriate numbers.

We hear “I pretty much only need to dictate text.  I don't need command capability” all the time from end users.  But what you probably don't realize is that you use commands all the time without thinking about it.  Real command capability can easily increase your computer efficiency by 25% or more. KnowBrainer includes over 10,000 time-saving commands and many of them apply directly to dictation. Example: When utilizing Select-&-Say correction we substitute Pick <1-10> for choose <1-10> because it is easier to say, it is more accurate, it moves the cursor back to the end of the current paragraph and prevents the Title Case bug.

You mentioned that you used Outlook 2007.  With KnowBrainer, you can say what you see and submenu items are included.  They're also Power Commands like Personal Reply which clicks the Reply button, types the person's first name into the MessageBox, capitalizes the first letter their name, types a comma after their name and presses the {Enter} Key twice.  When you want to send that message you can say Send but you can eliminate steps by saying Send and Delete which will send the message, delete the original message and move down to preview the next message.  You just have to think automation.

Over 99.9% of our customers who purchase DNS Pro also purchase KnowBrainer 2006 and you might think this is an unnecessary expense because they're paying $769 (which is a discount) for the ability to create their own commands.  With NaturallySpeaking Preferred you don't have the ability to create real macros but when you add KnowBrainer, you do. We have not yet Voice Automated Firefox but KnowBrainer gives you the tools to do so.  Now that you are informed... the choice is yours

Dear Lunis:

Many thanks for the rapid reply. I was not sure about the difference between the upgrade and a full version.

With respect to commands, I am quite comfortable with my rudimentary combination of voice and using the mouse and keyboard. To be honest, because I write (and therefore speak) much of the day, my throat appreciates the break. While slower than your program, I need the time to reflect on what I'm doing, so using the mouse helps me. This is perhaps due to the nature of my work, which no doubt differs from many of your users.

Many thanks for the advice on the “ curly quote ” issue. I fixed that.

Is there a similar fix for apostrophes?

Best, Richard

You can probably look up the ASCII code in Microsoft Word but it won't do you any good because you won't be able to dictate words like “don't, won't etc…” (note the straight apostrophe) unless you do an enormous amount of Vocabulary Editor editing.
